Priory Direct, a prominent sustainable packaging supplier based in Aylesford, Kent, is actively developing an innovative science-based tool aimed at helping retailers assess the waste and environmental effects of their packaging and supply chains. This initiative is supported by a national innovation scheme, Innovate UK, in collaboration with the University of Kent.
The firm, which services over 21,000 businesses—approximately two-thirds of which are retailers—intends to implement a cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Impact Assessment (LCIA) model. This comprehensive approach extends beyond traditional assessments by enabling retailers to gauge the total CO2 emissions and environmental repercussions associated with their packaging decisions and supply chain configurations. In a sector that has seen a significant rise in ecological awareness among consumers, this tool is positioned to empower businesses to make informed choices to mitigate packaging emissions and waste.
The urgency for such a tool arises from the fashion industry, which is responsible for around 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions, largely due to its energy-intensive production processes and extensive supply chains, including packaging, that are further complicated by the growth of e-commerce. Retailers are increasingly expected to tackle these challenges as they strive to meet net-zero emissions targets. However, many suppliers face difficulties in providing the necessary product and operational transparency, thereby complicating the effort to quantify supply chain impacts accurately.
Josh Pitman, Managing Director of Priory Direct, highlights the pressing need for accurate data as consumers begin to prioritise environmental credentials in their purchasing decisions. He emphasises that the traditional methods of Life Cycle Assessment often overlook critical factors, reducing complex impacts to simplistic carbon metrics. Priory Direct's tool aims to provide a more nuanced analysis, incorporating additional variables such as microplastic generation, acidification, and eutrophication, thus delivering a wider view of sustainability. This model is intended to ensure compliance with Extended Producer Responsibility requirements and to meet ISO-approved standards.
The project adheres to rigorous standards as outlined by ISO 14040, ISO 14044, EN 15804, and the LCA Handbook of the International Reference Life Cycle Data System (ILCD), which aims to yield meaningful results that promote a circular economy. Accelerated Knowledge Transfer (AKT) schemes, which involve collaboration between businesses and academic partners for short-term innovative projects, support this initiative, with funding allocated from UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) through Innovate UK.
Clare Witcher, Senior Knowledge Transfer Partnership Officer at the University of Kent, articulates the importance of merging academic expertise with business innovation to turn ideas into tangible outcomes. The partnership allows Priory Direct access to extensive academic resources and specialised knowledge, essential for the success of their project.
To bolster the development of this tool, Priory Direct is leveraging the expertise of a full-time PhD chemist, who will work alongside Dr Rob Barker, a senior lecturer in Chemistry and Forensic Science at the university. This collaboration aims to produce a transparent and efficient carbon calculation model that aligns with Green Claims Code compliance.
In addition to this project, Priory Direct and the University of Kent are working together on another Knowledge Transfer Project focused on the development of an AI-powered forecasting model utilizing machine learning. This model aims to facilitate improved planning and management of packaging stock, reflecting an ongoing commitment to enhance operational efficiency in the industry, with a funding allocation of £265,000 from Innovate UK.
Through these initiatives, Priory Direct aims to create a significant impact not just for its clientele but for the broader retail sector, striving towards enhanced sustainability and transparency in the packaging supply chain.
