In a significant development for the media industry, the World Association of News Publishers (WAN-IFRA) has initiated several programmes aimed at supporting its members in adopting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. These initiatives come at a time when the integration of AI into media practices is increasingly recognised as essential for enhancing audience engagement and operational efficiency.
Ezra Eeman, noted for his extensive expertise in media innovation and digital transformation, has been appointed to spearhead these initiatives. As a veteran with nearly two decades of experience, Eeman brings a wealth of knowledge regarding AI applications, particularly in content creation and newsroom automation. His new role will focus on creating AI roadmaps for WAN-IFRA members, facilitating forums for discussion, and encouraging collaboration within the media sector. Eeman emphasised the importance of mastering AI in today's fast-paced media landscape, aiming to assist news organisations in navigating this transformative technology.
Among the initiatives launched is an AI Community, designed as a networking platform for news media executives and content creators to exchange insights on AI's impact on media. It will feature a dedicated Slack channel, regular webinars with industry experts, and case studies to foster collaboration and knowledge sharing among members.
Furthermore, WAN-IFRA is hosting regional and international AI Forums which have already successfully taken place in major cities such as Bengaluru, Jakarta, Madrid, and Paris. Upcoming forums are scheduled for Frankfurt and Mexico City, aimed at providing media professionals with opportunities to share best practices and discuss innovative applications of AI in their fields.
Additionally, WAN-IFRA plans to offer AI-focused study tours, with the next one set for San Francisco and Silicon Valley from January 27 to 31, 2025, followed by a tour in Bengaluru. These tours aim to provide participants with direct exposure to leading AI technologies, enhancing their understanding and implementation within their organisations.
The newly launched AI Academy presents another layer to WAN-IFRA's offerings, providing self-paced online modules specifically tailored for newsroom AI applications. This educational platform intends to equip media professionals with essential skills to thrive in this AI-driven environment.
Complementing these new initiatives, WAN-IFRA continues with existing projects such as the Newsroom AI Catalyst Accelerator. This programme, which is in collaboration with OpenAI, is aimed at training 128 newsrooms across various regions including Europe, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and South Asia, to help them develop and scale AI solutions effectively. Additionally, the Data Science Expert Group, consisting of over 400 data analysts and engineers, focuses on providing insights and tools to enhance audience engagement and revenue generation.
To guide its strategic initiatives, WAN-IFRA has established an Advisory Board chaired by Eeman. This board features prominent figures from leading media and AI organisations, including representatives from Reuters, Gannett Media, Ouest-France, and Süddeutsche Zeitung. The board's role will be to deliver strategic insights and steer WAN-IFRA's AI roadmap, addressing challenges and supporting the adoption of impactful AI solutions in the media industry.
Through these efforts, WAN-IFRA aims to empower its members to embrace AI's transformative potential, ensuring they remain competitive and relevant in an increasingly digital landscape. The combination of Eeman's leadership and a robust support framework established by WAN-IFRA positions the organisation to facilitate significant advancements in AI integration across the media sector.
