In recent years, the emergence of deepfake technology has revolutionised the landscape of digital content creation and manipulation. While doctored images have existed for decades, the term "deepfake" has gained prominence, reflecting a new era driven by artificial intelligence. This advanced technology synthesises realistic images and videos, raising concerns regarding authenticity and potential misuse.
Deepfakes primarily rely on a specific type of artificial intelligence known as a "diffusion model." This model operates by stripping away noise from a given image to produce a clear, recognizable version. Speaking to Scripps News, Lucas Hansen, co-founder of CivAI, explained that diffusion models utilise learned experiences to reconstruct images, similar to a detective piecing together evidence to identify a suspect. This process involves progressively refining an initial noisy image based on defined clues.
The functionality of diffusion models demonstrates their ability to create coherent images from seemingly random or corrupted inputs. "The job of the diffusion model is to remove noise," commented Siddharth Hiregowdara, also co-founder of CivAI. The method essentially allows the AI to erase distractions until it reveals an image that aligns with the designated subject, such as a cat. As deepfake technology continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly capable of producing hyper-realistic content.
Many deepfakes incorporate face-swapping technologies, akin to filters found on popular social media platforms such as Snapchat, Instagram, and TikTok. These systems detect and replace faces in real-time, a process involving cutting and retouching the facial representation based on the internal model of the AI. Hansen elaborated, stating that AI recognises a face and modifies it accordingly in successive frames to achieve a polished final product.
As the line between real and synthetic becomes less distinguishable, experts urge an emphasis on technological literacy to mitigate the risks associated with deepfakes. They have already been implicated in the spread of misinformation during elections and even in more alarming contexts involving explicit content targeting minors. Siwei Lyu, a professor at SUNY Empire State College, highlighted the urgency of improving public awareness and understanding regarding these sophisticated technologies. He mentioned the creation of the "DeepFake-o-meter," a tool developed by his team to assist in recognising deepfakes.
"Our goal is to enhance user education about the implications of deepfake technology," Lyu stated. He noted the necessity of involving media and government initiatives to make vulnerable populations, such as children and the elderly, aware of the pitfalls of AI-driven content.
CivAI underscores the importance of public education regarding AI technologies. Hansen indicated that their mission is to make the complexities of AI more comprehensible, enabling people to experience and understand these advancements first-hand. "We want to give people a really intuitive experience of what's going on," Hansen said, suggesting that fostering a deeper understanding is essential in countering the potential societal effects posed by synthetic content.
As developments in AI and deepfake technology progress, experts maintain that education and heightened vigilance will be crucial. Hansen recognised that cultural shifts will play a significant role in this evolving narrative, as society learns to discern between reality and fabrication in the digital age. As these technologies proliferate, the need for informed and cautious engagement with AI-generated content becomes ever more pressing.
