Neal Mohan, the new chief executive of YouTube, has articulated an ambitious vision for the platform that underscores its critical role within Google's broader business strategy as it pivots towards artificial intelligence (AI) and automation. His remarks come at a time when YouTube not only generates a substantial portion of Alphabet's overall revenue but also faces fierce competition and changing digital landscapes.

Mohan's journey with YouTube began nearly two decades ago when he worked for DoubleClick, an advertising platform that facilitated the monetisation of early digital content. Following the acquisition of both DoubleClick and YouTube by Google, Mohan played a vital part in expanding Google’s advertising scope into the burgeoning field of online video. Currently, YouTube is responsible for approximately $50 billion in annual revenue for Alphabet, which positions it as a critical arm of the company as it navigates challenges in its core search and advertising divisions.

In a recent interview at the company’s San Bruno headquarters, Mohan expressed optimism about YouTube's future prospects, indicating that the platform is only beginning to explore the possibilities of emerging technologies, particularly generative AI. He stated, "I’m really bullish on the future of YouTube. We’re still in the first or second inning... We haven’t even touched the tip of the iceberg in what we’ll be able to do with technologies like generative AI."

Despite a challenging fiscal environment in 2023, YouTube’s advertising revenue rebounded, showing a 15% increase to $25.7 billion in the first nine months of 2024. This figure, while representing a fraction of the $144 billion derived from Google’s search-related advertising, holds significance for the company as it increases investments in data centres and chip development to fuel its AI initiatives.

Mohan’s leadership style is notably characterised by a commitment to creators on the platform, having highlighted that YouTube has disbursed approximately $70 billion to its creators over the past three years. He has introduced AI-infused features designed to enhance creator capabilities without undermining their roles. Experimental tools like Dream Screen and Dream Track, developed by DeepMind—Google’s AI division—aim to "synthetically generate beautiful videos and music from text." Mohan is keen to ensure that AI acts as an enabler for human creativity rather than a substitute. “AI has to be in service of human creativity," he emphasised.

Furthermore, the advent of auto dubbing translates content into multiple languages, addressing a significant barrier for creators looking to widen their audience. Mohan reflected, “Creators who have these massive audiences, what’s the barrier to their growth? Language. That’s a problem that AI can solve.”

YouTube's trajectory is not without its challenges. Mohan must also navigate the political dimensions surrounding free speech on the platform, especially as tensions rise due to figures like President-elect Donald Trump, who was banned for incitement following the January 6 Capitol riots. Mohan remarked on the platform's commitment to free speech, whilst also emphasising the need for moderation: "But, just because it’s an open platform, it doesn’t mean that anything goes."

In recent years, YouTube has observed significant consumption trends, with its platform increasingly favoured for viewing not just user-generated content but also professionally produced series and live sports. Remarkably, YouTube now invests over $20 billion annually in original content alone, ranking it as the third-highest spender behind Disney and Comcast.

Reflecting on his career path, Mohan has held various pivotal roles within the company since joining Google in 2007. Following his appointment as CEO in 2023, succeeding Susan Wojcicki after her recent passing, he has faced scrutiny about his intent within the broader Google hierarchy, to which he remained non-committal, focusing instead on the promising developments AI technology may bring to YouTube.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, Mohan’s strategic focus on AI and creator collaboration signifies a key phase in YouTube’s growth journey, aligning the platform’s future with technological advancements and the expanding needs of its creator community.
