Nike is propelling the evolution of athletic footwear through its innovative project AIR, an initiative designed to redefine performance and aesthetics in sportswear. Over the last decade, the company has leveraged subversive engineering and cutting-edge design technologies, creating footwear that goes beyond mere functionality, targeting the unique specifications and aspirations of elite athletes.
Project AIR, which stands for Athlete Imagined Revolution, embodies a collaborative effort between Nike's design and manufacturing teams and a select group of 13 global athletes. Notable figures in this project include French football star Kylian Mbappé, basketball sensation Victor Wembanyama, and world-class sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson. The initiative has allowed Nike to explore these athletes' visions for the future of footwear while integrating generative AI and advanced 3D printing techniques to create state-of-the-art products.
Roger Chen, the Vice President of NXT Digital Production Creation at Nike, highlighted the importance of their generative tools, stating, "Our mastery of our generative tools allows us to hear athletes with a specificity that's unmatched.” This reflects the company's commitment to an athlete-centred approach in its product development process.
Nike's operations for Project AIR are based in the LeBron James Innovation Center, a hub for advanced creation located at the company’s World Headquarters in Oregon. This project is an extension of Nike's long-standing experimentation with additive manufacturing, having first ventured into this realm in 2013 with the launch of the Nike Vapour Laser Talon, the first football boot created using additive manufacturing technology. However, it was not until 2016 that the company made a formal commitment to this production method by partnering with the technology firm HP.
The project was unveiled last April during ‘Nike On Air’, a lavish multi-million dollar event that celebrated the company's proprietary footwear technology. The showcase took place at the Palais Brongniart in Paris, featuring an immersive museum-like experience that documented Nike's historical legacy alongside its ambitious technological aspirations. Among the highlights of the event was the introduction of the Pegasus Premium, noted as Nike’s biggest advancement since the release of its AlphaFly super-shoe system. This latest addition to the Nike line features an advanced air unit designed to optimise the runner’s power transfer from heel strike to toe-off, a feature that Kathy Gomez, Vice President of NXT Footwear, said sets Nike apart in the footwear industry: “AIR is Nike’s separator in the footwear industry — no one can create cushioning innovations like we can.”
‘Nike On Air’ was strategically aligned with Nike’s promotional efforts for the upcoming Paris Olympics, attracting 40 elite athletes, including tennis champion Serena Williams, and a contingent of 400 media professionals and marketplace partners. The company's investment in Olympic marketing and product launches exceeded US$1 billion, marking its most extensive financial commitment for any Olympic event to date.
The current economic climate presents a challenging backdrop for Nike, as the global market becomes increasingly competitive and stagnant. As reported, 2023 is the company’s most difficult fiscal year in over two decades. Amidst growing competition from brands like New Balance, Under Armour, and Adidas, which are also utilising 3D printing technologies for product development, Nike’s agile integration of AI into its processes has played a critical role in maintaining its leading position within the industry.
The positive reception of Project AIR, particularly in the realms of footwear and soccer apparel, has coincided with a notable uptick in sales. As Chief Innovation Officer John Hoke asserts, evoking emotional responses from consumers is crucial for the project’s success: "For these prototypes to be successful, they must stir emotions; they must evoke a sense of awe for what lies just beyond the horizon, an optimism for the future."
Nike's forward-thinking approach and commitment to innovation continue to shape the landscape of athletic footwear as the brand adeptly navigates market challenges and harnesses new technologies.
