At CES 2025 in Las Vegas, Nuwa Pen is set to showcase an innovative smart ballpoint pen designed to bridge the gap between traditional handwriting and modern digital applications. The device, which employs a standard D1 ballpoint ink cartridge along with advanced AI, computer vision, and motion sensors, is capable of digitizing handwritten text in real time as users write on any type of paper.

Scheduled to enter public beta shipping in February 2025, the Nuwa Pen aims to enhance the writing experience by allowing individuals to enjoy the tactile pleasure of writing while maintaining productivity in a digital context. Pre-orders have already exceeded 5,000, with the pen available at a special pre-order price of $295.

Attendees at CES can experience the Nuwa Pen firsthand at CES Unveiled Las Vegas on January 5, 2025, at the Mandalay Bay Hotel. Following that, media interviews and demonstrations will be available on January 6, with a public showcase taking place at the Venetian Expo from January 7 to January 10.

In recent years, concerns have arisen regarding the impact of extensive screen time on various aspects of health and cognitive function. Research has highlighted benefits associated with handwriting, including improvements in literacy and communication skills. Marc Tuinier, CEO and founder of Nuwa Pen, commented on the significance of handwriting in an increasingly digital world. Speaking to VentureBeat, he said, “Writing is one of the most human acts. Many of history’s most extraordinary ideas and literature were handwritten, not typed.” He emphasised that the Nuwa Pen allows users to create handwritten notes without the need to constantly refer to screens, thus fostering a more authentic writing experience.

In practice, the Nuwa Pen allows users to simply write in a notebook or on loose sheets of paper, while the device captures and digitises the text through its integrated cameras, with results displayed in the Nuwa+ companion app. This app not only digitises written text but also organises notes, enabling users to sync them with other productivity applications like email and calendars.

The Nuwa Pen offers additional features such as easy transcription of handwritten notes, seamless synchronisation across devices, and a built-in search function. It also allows for collaboration by enabling users to share their notes, while maintaining an unlimited storage capability for their digitised writings. An innovative writing dashboard helps keep track of writing metrics, and a smart summary function aids in organising notes effectively.

Tuinier elaborated on the device's purpose, stating, “Unlike most emerging tech that moves humanity further from reality, Nuwa Pen takes a bold step backward—toward authenticity.” He conveyed confidence that the future of work and creativity will not be dictated by larger screens or immersive technologies, but by the simple act of writing.

Founded in 2020 and headquartered in Groningen, The Netherlands, Nuwa Pen reflects a growing trend in business automation and personal productivity tools that integrate traditional methods into modern workflows. The impending release of the Nuwa Pen highlights the continuing evolution of AI technologies aimed at improving efficiency while also addressing the need for more authentic human experiences in communication and creativity.
