AI: A Potential Solution to the Global Mental Health Crisis
Middle East, 2024 – As the shortage of mental health professionals continues to burden healthcare systems worldwide, the search for alternative solutions is becoming increasingly urgent. At the "TFT Watchlist: Top Healthcare Professionals in the Middle East" Summit 2024, Dr. Khulood Mohamed Alsayegh brought critical insights into the discussion on the evolving role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in mental health care.
The summit, held with the support of key sponsors such as the Bank of the Philippine Islands, RLC Residences, Philippine Airlines, and Danaya’s Flowers, as well as media partners GMA Pinoy TV and The Philippine News Agency, sought to address the pressing issue of mental health care access and the role of AI in mitigating this problem.
The Growing Burden of Mental Health
Dr. Alsayegh, an AI Ethics expert, highlighted the severe lack of mental health professionals, describing a scenario where one doctor would be responsible for the mental well-being of an entire stadium filled with people. The analogy underscored the overwhelming demand that far exceeds the current supply of mental health providers.
During her keynote address, she shared alarming statistics, pointing out that 14 percent of healthcare workers themselves are struggling with mental illnesses, with an increased risk of suicide among this demographic. This situation complicates the already critical global shortage of mental health professionals, as these workers are expected to care for others while grappling with their own mental health issues.
Dr. Alsayegh explained that the mental health challenges faced by healthcare professionals go beyond common conditions like anxiety and depression. Many suffer from chronic symptoms such as constant tiredness, sleep disturbances due to irregular shifts, burnout, and loss of motivation.
AI: The Promising Frontier?
As many turn to AI for potential solutions, Dr. Alsayegh raised a pertinent question: Can AI truly solve the complex mental health issues we face?
Critics often question AI’s capability to provide accurate and reliable mental health care. Dr. Alsayegh acknowledged this limitation, pointing out the challenge in objectively diagnosing mental disorders: “I can measure if you’re diabetic by checking your blood sugar. But how can I measure your outcome—whether you’re doing bad or good in mental illness?”
Nevertheless, she shared promising findings from a global study conducted in collaboration with Mohamed Bin Rashid School of Government and Massey University in New Zealand. The study revealed AI's efficacy in identifying various mental health conditions, illustrating how symptoms of depression manifest differently among individuals.
Using data analytics, AI demonstrated an impressive ability to identify subtypes of depression within communities. For instance, some groups may experience depression more physically with symptoms like tiredness, while others might describe their feelings as worthless, reflecting their perception of the world.
Moreover, AI has shown potential in providing proactive intervention recommendations. It can group patients by common symptoms and provide aggregated data to highlight risks, such as potential suicide or job resignation. These insights could help healthcare providers offer more tailored and effective care.
Building Mental Health Resilience
Dr. Alsayegh also brought attention to a policy published by the Mohamed Bin Rashid School of Government on the "Future of Workplace Wellbeing," which advocates for building mental health resilience and developing transparent strategies to measure the impact.
Challenges and Ethical Considerations
When considering AI integration into healthcare, Dr. Alsayegh stressed four key principles: transparency, accountability, privacy, and algorithmic bias. She emphasised that AI solutions must be equitable and work for the benefit of many, ensuring that everyone has equal access to healthcare.
“I want to see equity. I want to see a world where you are able to access healthcare equally, a world where you are able to have equal outcomes. I want to show that no one is held back, and if you need help, it is available, and if that invisible hero is able to do so, then maybe it’s time to adopt it,” she stated.
The Future of AI in Mental Health Care
As AI continues to integrate into healthcare, its role in supporting mental well-being becomes an increasingly real possibility. Dr. Alsayegh concluded with a powerful reflection on the potential of AI to enhance healthcare: “A physician with AI will surpass one without it.”
With continued advancements and ethical considerations, AI might soon provide a widespread solution to the global mental health crisis, offering hope for improved access to care and better outcomes for many.
