UK Regulator Warns of Uninsurable Risks in AI-Driven Insurance

Nikhil Rathi, CEO of the United Kingdom’s Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), has raised concerns about the potential for AI applications in the insurance industry to render some individuals "uninsurable". According to a report by the Financial Times, Rathi has called for a balanced approach that encourages innovation while safeguarding consumer interests.

Rathi urged the insurance industry to experiment with new technologies, suggesting that the benefits for most consumers and the broader economy could outweigh potential drawbacks. China’s MYbank Leverages AI for SMB Financial Planning

In China, MYbank has introduced an AI-powered predictive system aimed at transforming financial management for small- to medium-sized businesses (SMBs). Dubbed the "Cuckoo System," this tool boasts an impressive 95% accuracy in predicting SMBs’ cash flow patterns, potentially revolutionising how these businesses handle their finances.

According to a press release dated September 6, the Cuckoo System utilises Ant Group’s BaiLing foundation model to forecast when SMBs will engage in buying or selling investment products. This, in turn, allows banks to optimise the utilisation of funds and enhance returns. MYbank President Feng Liang highlighted that this AI tool addresses the need for secure, flexible investments that align with SMBs' cash cycles.

Drawing on MYbank’s extensive experience with 53 million SMBs, the system is already being used by five investment firms across seven SMB-focused products. Market analysts see substantial potential in the application of AI in this sector. Consultancy giant McKinsey projects that China’s bank investment market could reach 50 trillion yuan (approximately $7.1 trillion) by 2030, with SMBs expected to double their share over the next five years.

Launched in 2015, MYbank operates as a digital-only bank and is renowned for its "310 model," an AI-driven initiative offering swift, automated small business loans. This latest development underscores AI’s growing influence in finance, particularly in supporting underserved sectors such as SMBs, and aims to align financial products with the operational cycles of these businesses to improve efficiency and stimulate economic growth.

Harmonic Raises $75 Million to Develop Mathematical Superintelligence

In Palo Alto, California, AI startup Harmonic has successfully raised $75 million in Series A funding to advance its mission of developing mathematical superintelligence. According to a press release dated September 23, the funding round was led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from Index Ventures and other notable investors, including Era Funds, GreatPoint Ventures, and celebrities Nikesh Arora and Jared Leto. The latest investment values Harmonic at $325 million.

Founded in 2023, Harmonic is focused on creating an AI with mathematical capabilities that surpass those of humans. The company's Aristotle model has already achieved a 90% accuracy rate on a leading formal mathematics benchmark. Co-founder and CEO Tudor Achim noted that mathematical superintelligence has the potential to eliminate AI errors through "formal verification" and address data limitations with "self-play and synthetic data."

The potential applications of Harmonic’s technology extend to various fields, including software engineering, industrial design, and medical technology. Harmonic co-founder and executive chairman, Vlad Tenev, who is also the CEO of Robinhood, described mathematical superintelligence as “the next frontier in AI.”
