A recent survey conducted among business leaders and digital experts across the UK reveals a significant gap between recognising the importance of sustainability and taking actionable steps to achieve it. While an impressive 87% of respondents acknowledged that sustainability is crucial to their business, and 82% noted that their customers also prioritise it, only 51% have a fully developed and implemented digital sustainability roadmap for the next three to five years. Furthermore, just 46% of businesses consider digital sustainability an "extremely high priority."
This disparity between intention and action is a critical point of concern. Each online activity, whether it's a search query, a website click, or streaming content, consumes energy and leaves a carbon footprint. When scaled to millions and billions of users, this footprint becomes significantly impactful.
The survey identifies several barriers to achieving digital sustainability, with 90% of leaders citing at least one obstacle. The most common barrier is cost, with 62% of respondents highlighting high expenses or limited budgets as their primary challenge. This leaves a mere 10% of leaders feeling confident in their ability to effect positive change—an insufficient number to drive widespread impact.
However, those who have successfully integrated sustainability into their digital practices are already witnessing tangible benefits. Among these leaders, 88% report improved brand reputation, 73% experience a competitive advantage, and 63% note increased customer loyalty. These are compelling business incentives, reinforcing the case for incorporating sustainability into digital strategies.
Moving forward, several steps can be taken to enhance digital sustainability:
Develop a Comprehensive Roadmap: Only half of the surveyed businesses currently have a long-term digital sustainability plan. A detailed roadmap focusing on reducing carbon emissions across all digital operations is essential. This includes downsizing marketing technology (martech) stacks, utilising renewable hosting, and adopting greener technology and design practices.
Embrace AI Thoughtfully: Artificial Intelligence (AI) can play a crucial role in achieving digital sustainability, but its implementation needs careful management. The industry should balance the fast-paced adoption of AI with rigorous scrutiny to mitigate any potential negative environmental outcomes.
Invest in Greener Technology: Switching to composable and headless content management systems (CMS) can be far more energy-efficient compared to traditional monolithic systems. These modern platforms allow for efficient scaling and flexibility while reducing energy consumption.
Streamline Technology Stacks: The survey found that 12% of businesses use 16 or more martech tools, while 15% are unaware of the number of tools they’re subscribed to. Managing a bloated tech stack is not only inefficient but also a drain on resources, both environmentally and otherwise.
The data strongly suggests that businesses must act now to bridge the digital sustainability gap. Although the journey may be complex and costly, the environmental and competitive advantages make it a worthy endeavour. Cultivating a greener digital future means committing to changes today that will yield benefits for generations to come.
