ECL Announces Groundbreaking AI Factory Data Centre in Texas
Houston, Texas – In a transformative leap for the data centre and artificial intelligence (AI) industries, ECL has unveiled plans to construct one of the world's first fully sustainable 1GW AI Factory data centres, named ECL TerraSite-TX1. The facility, which will span over 600 acres east of Houston, is poised to drive significant advancements in AI technologies while adhering to zero-emission standards.
Scheduled to commence operations in the summer of 2025, the first phase of TerraSite-TX1 will require an estimated investment of approximately $450 million. This phase will establish 50MW of data centre capacity, designed to meet the needs of data centre cloud and AI cloud operators. The comprehensive 1GW facility is projected to be completed with a total expenditure of $8 billion, funded through a collaboration between ECL and its financial partners.
Ken Patchett, VP of Data Center Infrastructure at Lambda, expressed optimism about the project, stating, "The data centre technology committed to by ECL is truly transformative in the industry. We believe ECL’s technology could unlock a powerful and eco-conscious foundation for AI advancement. This new infrastructure could give researchers and developers essential computational resources while drastically reducing the environmental impact of AI operations."
The innovation extends beyond mere capacity and financial investment. ECL is addressing critical industry challenges with advanced solutions, taking inspiration from the success of its hydrogen-powered modular data centre, ECL-MV1. Operational round the clock, ECL-MV1 is among the world's first off-grid data centres that maintain zero emissions, minimal noise, and a negative water footprint – it even replenishes water back to the community.
Offering a remarkable 10-fold increase in energy efficiency with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.05 and a 7-fold enhancement in data density per rack, ECL-MV1 sets a precedent for meeting the high-density demands of AI.
Projections from Gartner indicate that by 2030, AI's electricity consumption could rise to 3.5% of global usage. "AI consumes a lot of electricity and water. This negative impact should be mitigated," said Pieter den Hamer, VP Analyst at Gartner. He advocated for the prioritisation of data centres powered by renewable energy to curtail AI's environmental footprint.
The ECL TerraSite-TX1 is specifically designed for the advancement of AI technologies, offering ample space for AI experts, researchers, data scientists, and engineers to collaborate on pioneering AI solutions. The site will be supplied with hydrogen via three distinct pipelines converging at its location, thereby eliminating the need for additional fuel transportation. With its modular construction, the development allows for future expansion up to 2GW based on demand.
ECL's innovative approach also presents a lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and fastest time-to-market in the data centre industry. These centres, which are modular, can be scaled in 1MW increments and are built to suit and delivered in less than 12 months, compared to the typical industry timeline of 36 to 48 months.
ECL’s AI infrastructure is bolstered by its advanced AI data centre management system, ECL Lightning, offering real-time monitoring and control over every operational aspect. This system, with its user-friendly interface, ensures optimal performance for AI and other workloads.
The data centre also features proprietary cooling technologies, utilising water derived from hydrogen-based power generation, along with a patent-pending quadruple loop and direct-to-chip cooling systems for high-density racks.
The construction of ECL TerraSite-TX1 arrives at a crucial time for Texas. On 12 June 2024, testimony from The Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) highlighted the state’s expected power demand to double by 2030, partly driven by data centres and AI growth. TerraSite-TX1 aims to mitigate this strain on Texas’s power grid while supporting the burgeoning AI sector.
