Elon Musk Refutes Rumours of Romance with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni
In a recent event that captured social media's attention, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk dismissed speculation regarding a romantic involvement with Italy's Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni. The speculation surged after Musk presented Meloni with an award at the Global Citizen Awards in New York City, hosted by the Atlantic Council think tank.
During the award presentation, Musk complimented Meloni, saying she was “even more beautiful inside than outside” and praised her for being “authentic, honest, and thoughtful.” These remarks, coupled with photographs of the two together at the event, sparked widespread rumours of a romantic relationship. However, Musk promptly refuted these claims on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter. He clarified that there was no romantic connection between them, stating, “I was there with my Mom.”
Despite the rumours, their professional interaction continued to make headlines. Meloni, who became Italy’s first female prime minister in 2022, has been a prominent figure in European politics. Her fervent speech at the event defending Western values was met with applause from attendees, including Musk, who stood to applaud.
This is not the first time Musk and Meloni have met. The two have had several encounters over the past year, discussing shared concerns such as the declining birth rates in the West and the potential of artificial intelligence. Musk visited Italy twice last year, in June and December, to meet with political leaders and participate in events organised by Meloni's Brothers of Italy party. These interactions have fuelled speculation about their relationship, but both have maintained that their connection is purely professional.
The Global Citizen Awards coincided with this week’s UN General Assembly, where Musk introduced Meloni on stage. Meloni requested Musk to present her with the award, further fuelling media and public interest in their relationship. At the event, Meloni lauded Musk as a “precious genius,” while Musk described her as “someone who is even more beautiful inside than on the outside.”
Following the viral photos and Musk’s complimentary remarks, social media erupted with playful speculation and memes. One user wrote, “Find someone who looks at you the same way the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni looks at Elon Musk,” while another joked, “You can’t have mELONi without ELON.”
Despite these humorous takes, political commentators were quick to highlight the media’s focus on personal lives, often overshadowing the substantive issues discussed between Musk and Meloni, such as global technological advancement and demographic challenges.
Musk, known for his roles as the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, and Meloni, a conservative political force in Europe, have both publicly expressed admiration for each other’s work. However, both leaders have firmly stated that their relationship remains strictly professional.
Meloni’s personal life has also been under scrutiny recently. She separated from her longtime partner Andrea Giambruno in October 2023, shortly after a lewd audio recording of him surfaced. In an X post, Meloni revealed their relationship had diverged for some time before the official split.

Musk’s speech at the event drew laughter from the 700 attendees when he quipped, “That can’t always be said about politicians,” referring to Meloni's authenticity. Meloni, in her response, delivered a passionate defence of nationalism and patriotism, challenging the notions of the inevitable decline of the West.
