In Pursuit of Progress: Jeffrey L. Bowman’s Reinvention of DEI through AI Technology

As diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) increasingly shape the contours of American business and education, innovations within the framework have come to the forefront. According to a report by McKinsey, nearly $350 billion flowed into DEI and racial justice initiatives in the aftermath of the 2020 murder of George Floyd. However, recent trends show a downsizing of DEI programmes across various sectors. High-profile institutions such as Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) are terminating mandatory DEI statements, and companies including Nordstrom and Salesforce are significantly reducing their DEI budgets and staff.

Amidst this shifting landscape, Jeffrey L. Bowman, 54, is pioneering a new approach to DEI. Formerly a senior-level executive at Ogilvy & Mather, Bowman invested his savings to launch Reframe AI Technologies a decade ago. His New York City-based consultancy distinguishes itself by treating diversity as a culture to be cultivated rather than a problem to be resolved.

Bowman encapsulates his vision and career journey with a frequently mentioned mantra: "I always said if I got the opportunity to modernize DEI then I would – and here we are today." Raised in Spartanburg, South Carolina, and beginning his corporate career at PepsiCo in 1990, Bowman has witnessed and experienced the evolution of DEI practices firsthand. His professional trajectory and the inequities he observed along the way motivated him to overhaul traditional DEI methodologies.

Over the past four years, Bowman and his international team of engineers have been developing an AI-powered platform tailored to this mission. The resulting innovation is the Reframe small language model (SLM), akin to ChatGPT but specialised in DEI. The platform, having undergone rigorous testing involving more than 3,000 interviews with corporate leaders and employees, stands out with its digital "personal assistant" – a chatbot designed to provide instant, tailored DEI advice.

For instance, if a manager is struggling to engage employees in DEI initiatives or budgeting for DEI efforts, the chatbot can offer personalised guidance based on a rich data set reflecting each user’s unique history and perspective. Bowman emphasises that, although AI brings challenges regarding privacy, creativity, and job security, it also enables more efficient and insightful DEI assessments – often completed within days instead of months.

Reframe continues to serve an array of clients, from Fortune 500 companies to smaller entities and non-profits such as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival. Despite maintaining a lean team that includes Bowman, a Chief Technology Officer (CTO), and three to four engineering contractors, the consultancy sometimes employs up to 10 software developers depending on project demands. This operational strategy, along with a steady client base, has allowed Reframe to navigate financial fluctuations effectively.

Bowman asserts that AI aligns with, rather than detracts from, the humanistic aims of DEI. He believes that success is not solely defined by meeting numeric targets but achieving a genuine cultural shift within organisations. Through technological advances, Reframe aspires to access broader markets and foster lasting impacts despite being relatively small and still maintaining a startup ethos.

Jeffrey L. Bowman’s innovative efforts signal a transformative period for DEI practices, leveraging AI to navigate and address the complexities of fostering inclusive corporate cultures. As traditional DEI approaches encounter downsizing, Bowman’s Reframe AI Technologies may well represent the future of how diversity, equity, and inclusion are integrated into business strategies and workplace environments.
