Level-5 Faces Backlash Over Alleged Use of AI-Generated Artwork in New Yo-Kai Watch Project
Tokyo, Japan - Earlier this week, Level-5, a renowned Japanese video game developer, unveiled its latest Yo-Kai Watch concept, titled 'Holy Horror Mansion.' Billed as the company’s largest "cross-media project" to date, the project ambitiously encompasses what is described as a "Ghost Craft RPG." However, the initial fanfare surrounding the announcement has quickly been overshadowed by a controversy involving AI-generated artwork.
The unveiling, presented through a teaser trailer, immediately became the subject of scrutiny and speculation among fans. Many eagle-eyed viewers, inspecting the footage closely, claimed that portions of the trailer appear to feature artwork produced by generative AI. This assertion has sparked significant debate and concern across various social platforms, especially 'X' (formerly known as Twitter).
One vocal fan noted the dissatisfaction felt within the community, stating, "I tolerated the AI use during their development as it was promised to only be used as referential material but creating an entire trailer, having minimal original assets and padding it out with AIgen without remarks to the viewer is some of the scummiest behaviour imaginable," shared ToriBear's Trivia Corner (@YoukaiNewsEN) on the platform.
Others pointed out specific elements within the trailer, such as certain background scenes, suggesting they were either partially or entirely AI-generated. This revelation has led to disappointment among loyal followers of the Yo-Kai Watch series. Another user expressed his discontent, commenting, "On further inspection, the trailer for Holy Horror Mansion appears to feature backgrounds that were either partially or entirely generated using AI. I am incredibly disappointed in Level-5, this is not how you create a successor to Yo-kai Watch."
Despite the fervent objections and the growing threads discussing this issue, it’s important to note that Level-5's experimentation with generative AI is a documented initiative. Some fans have attempted to quell the uproar by highlighting that the AI presence in the teaser might not translate to the final product, indicating a possibility that these AI-generated assets are merely placeholders or conceptual aids. "It's still early days with this game, so even if these claims about the teaser featuring generative AI are accurate, this project is subject to change," reassured one user, reflecting a more patient and hopeful outlook.
Level-5 has yet to publicly address the controversy directly. However, they stated that more details about 'Holy Horror Mansion' will be shared in Spring 2025. As of now, specifics regarding release dates and the platforms on which the game will be available remain undisclosed.
The controversy arrives at a critical juncture for Level-5 as they endeavour to push the boundaries of their creative projects while navigating the complexities of modern technology integration in traditional art forms. It remains to be seen how the company will respond to the backlash and whether they will make adjustments based on the feedback from their dedicated fanbase.
While the use of AI in the creative industry remains a contentious topic, the resolution of this issue will certainly be a pivotal moment for Level-5 and the future of its highly anticipated 'Holy Horror Mansion' project.
