Meta Unveils Quest 3S, Orion AR Glasses Prototype, and Enhancements to Ray-Ban Smart Glasses at Meta Connect 2024
At the Meta Connect 2024 event, Meta, formerly known as Facebook, announced a string of significant updates and innovations across its product lineup. The highlights of the event included the unveiling of the budget-friendly Quest 3S VR headset and a prototype of advanced Orion AR glasses. Additionally, Meta introduced new styles and features for its Ray-Ban smart glasses.
The Quest 3S: Budget-Friendly VR with High-End Features
Meta officially introduced the Quest 3S, an entry-level virtual reality headset designed to provide advanced VR capabilities at an affordable price of $299. Despite its budget-friendly tag, the Quest 3S shares much of its technology with the higher-priced Quest 3.
The Quest 3S retains many of the features from the Quest 3, although it comes with some differences. The Quest 3S is slightly larger in size and features front sensors arranged in two triangular formations, differing from the three pill-shaped cutouts seen in the Quest 3. Notably, the Quest 3S lacks a depth sensor and the display, while lower in resolution compared to the Quest 3, is on par with the Quest 2. According to Meta, these differences allow the Quest 3S to maintain a competitive price point without compromising on the overall user experience.
Orion AR Glasses Prototype: A Glimpse into Future Augmented Reality
Meta also showcased the Orion AR glasses prototype, which they claim to be the most advanced pair of AR smart glasses developed to date. The Orion glasses integrate advanced augmented reality capabilities, bringing forward innovative solutions from various fields of modern computing.
While Orion is currently a prototype and not yet available to consumers, Meta emphasized that it is a product they plan to release in the future. However, no specific timeline has been provided. The standout feature of Orion is its expansive field of view, which is the largest seen in any AR glasses to date. This wide field of view enables immersive experiences ranging from multitasking with multiple windows and enjoying big-screen entertainment to interacting with life-size holograms, seamlessly integrating digital content with the physical world.
Enhancements for Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses
Meta's already popular Ray-Ban smart glasses have received updates both in hardware and software. The hardware updates include new styles, such as transparent frames and transition lenses that adapt to changing light conditions.
On the software front, Meta is updating the AI capabilities of the smart glasses. The Meta AI now includes a reminders feature, which assists users in managing their daily tasks, such as keeping track of grocery lists. Additionally, the Meta AI has been made more responsive, and Meta has promised the addition of a real-time speech translation feature to be available soon.
Meta's announcements at Connect 2024 reflect its ongoing commitment to innovation in virtual and augmented reality, expanding the accessibility and functionality of its technology for a broader audience. These new products and updates suggest a future where immersive digital experiences become seamlessly integrated into our everyday lives.
