Nokia Joins AI Pact in Preparation for EU's AI Act Compliance
London — Nokia has officially announced its participation in the AI Pact, a voluntary initiative designed to support businesses in preparing for compliance with the European Union's AI Act. This significant step aligns with Nokia's ongoing commitment to responsible and innovative use of artificial intelligence in its products and services.
The AI Act, a legally binding framework, categorises AI systems based on the risk they pose and lays down stringent regulations for their use. The Act came into force in August 2024 and is set to be implemented in stages over the following three years. With the AI Pact, companies like Nokia can adapt their AI compliance processes and share experiences through EU-organised workshops, ensuring they meet the Act's requirements efficiently.
Ingrid Viitanen, General Counsel at Nokia Strategy & Technology, highlighted Nokia's dedication to ethical AI practices. She remarked, "Nokia’s AI Pact pledges underscore our ongoing commitment to the responsible, innovative and business-oriented implementation of Artificial Intelligence in our AI-powered products and services." She further emphasised Nokia's efforts in setting up an AI Governance Framework to enhance internal AI processes and build trust among stakeholders, including customers, suppliers, and authorities. Viitanen also noted the company's active role in developing industry standards that reflect the AI Act's conditions. "We look forward to sharing our learnings collaboratively and transparently with our industry peers and with the EU AI Office," she added.
Nokia Bell Labs, the company's research division, is a noted leader in AI technology and its application in communication networks and industrial automation. In 2022, Nokia Bell Labs established six guiding principles for their AI research and development: fairness, reliability, privacy, transparency, sustainability, and accountability. These principles remain crucial as Nokia embraces a broader industry focus on environmental sustainability, social responsibility, and governance.
By joining the AI Pact, Nokia demonstrates its proactive stance in aligning with the evolving regulatory landscape and sets a precedent for the responsible deployment of AI within the telecommunications sector.
