Bengaluru - September 26, 2024: super.money, an emerging fintech app backed by the retail giant Flipkart, has launched an innovative marketing campaign featuring its new brand influencer, ‘SUMO’. SUMO stands out in the crowded influencer market as an AI-driven, human-in-goat’s-avatar character designed to resonate with everyday Indians who are weary of superficial marketing tactics and uninspiring digital rewards.
SUMO’s character embodies the collective frustration that many users feel towards current UPI (Unified Payments Interface) apps, which often offer rewards that are difficult to redeem or genuinely impractical. With his dry humour and relatable frustration, SUMO highlights the exaggerated promises made by various digital payment platforms.
The centrepiece of the campaign is a 75-second digital video film that follows SUMO through his daily routine. The scenes depict SUMO, a man dressed as a goat, performing ordinary activities such as getting a haircut, enjoying a cup of chai, and shopping for vegetables. Throughout these scenarios, SUMO expresses a disinterested “Meh!” as a response, piquing viewers' curiosity about the source of his indifference.
As the film unfolds, it becomes clear that SUMO’s nonchalance is directed at the lacklustre and often meaningless rewards provided by current UPI apps. The climax reveals super.money as the solution, with a promise of real cashback for every merchant transaction, offering users substantial rewards for their everyday purchases.
The campaign was developed with the insight that people, irrespective of age or financial status, prefer tangible cash rewards over impractical scratch cards. “SUMO is the voice of everyone who feels stuck in the daily grind and doesn’t have the luxury of generational wealth to fall back on," said Prakash Sikaria, Founder & CEO of super.money. Sikaria emphasised that SUMO’s dry wit and no-nonsense attitude reflect the app’s mission to provide genuine financial rewards and innovative brand engagement.
Shikha Gupta, the consulting creative director at super.money, elaborated on the creative direction, stating, “super.money believes in going against the tide. That means no useless rewards in the app and no celebs in the film. Instead, we created a character of our own that reflects the realities of modern life. SUMO is relatable, witty, and offers a much-needed break from the glossy, unattainable personas we often see in ads.”
Indrasish Mukherjee, Director of Footloose Films, who directed the ad film, commented, “The idea was to capture the frustration we all feel when faced with disappointing rewards. The goat’s ‘Meh’ reactions every time he pays—whether he’s getting a haircut or buying vegetables—humorously exaggerated how unsatisfying these rewards are. We wanted something quirky that people could relate to, but also something that would stand out and stick.”
SUMO is designed not only as a brand influencer but also as a relatable figure for tech-savvy, young users who demand more from their financial apps. His character symbolises the everyday struggle of corporate life and the drive for more meaningful and immediate rewards.
SUMO’s journey can be followed on Instagram at @real.sumo, where he continues to provide humorous takes on life, work, and financial frustrations.
With this innovative approach, super.money aims to distinguish itself in the fintech landscape by addressing the common dissatisfaction with digital rewards and offering a more valuable, user-centric alternative.
