TransPennine Express Completes Successful Trial of Assistive Technology for Hearing-Impaired Passengers
London, UK – October 2023: TransPennine Express (TPE), a prominent train operator in the UK, has recently completed a two-day trial of an innovative assistive technology aimed at enhancing the travel experience for passengers with hearing impairments. The groundbreaking trial, carried out in collaboration with technology company Televic, showcased an AI-powered announcement system designed to transcribe live announcements into real-time text displayed on onboard screens.
The system, primarily intended to aid hearing-impaired passengers, transcribes conductors' live announcements, allowing these passengers to access real-time information that would otherwise be communicated solely through audio. This development is expected to significantly improve accessibility, ensuring that critical travel information, such as service disruptions and updates, reach all passengers effectively.
One of the core challenges that the AI had to overcome was its capability to recognise and transcribe a variety of accents accurately, handle the complex background noise typical of train environments, and operate without the need for an internet connection. The new speech-to-text announcement system is considered a pioneering innovation in the UK's railway sector and is the result of funding by Innovate UK.
Kathryn O’Brien, Customer Experience & Transformation Director at TransPennine Express, expressed optimism about the technology's future impact. "The speech-to-text announcement system complements the live train information already displayed on screens onboard our trains, such as arrival and departure times, by adding a personalised touch to our service disruption updates and other announcements," O’Brien remarked. "Our two-day trial was a huge step forward, showing that this AI-powered speech-to-text system has the potential to change the future of rail travel. We want our trains and stations to be accessible to everyone, and we hope this innovation will give people the confidence to travel with us – no matter their needs."
Televic’s Research Lead, Steven Lauwereins, also highlighted the significance of this advancement, stating, "Visualising manual announcements is the next step in Televic’s goal of improving passenger experience and will be a game changer for accessibility. Our live transcription of announcement system uses innovative onboard transcription models to guarantee high-quality transcriptions in real-time."
The successful trial marks the beginning stages of development, with TPE now planning to implement this technology across its Class 397 fleet, potentially setting a new standard for accessibility in rail travel.
This trial follows another innovative testing initiative earlier this year by train operator Northern, which explored using AI to deliver train announcements in British Sign Language for routes between Manchester and Leeds, as well as Leeds to York.
The successful integration of such assistive technologies reflects a broader commitment within the railway industry to improve access and inclusion for all passengers, particularly those with disabilities.
