Ai Ogura Breaks Lap Record in Thrilling Moto2 Practice Session at Indonesian GP
Mandalika, Indonesia — In a day marked by fierce competition and record-breaking performances, Ai Ogura set a new lap record during Practice 1 of the Moto2 Indonesian Grand Prix at the Mandalika International Street Circuit. The Japanese rider, representing MT Helmets-MSi/Boscoscuro, clocked in an impressive 1m33.690s, securing his place as the fastest rider of the session.
The practice session began with Manuel González of QJMotor Gresini/Kalex initially taking the lead in the early laps. His commanding time set the pace for others until Tony Arbolino of Elf Marc VDS/Kalex managed to surpass him 11 minutes into the session, taking the top spot.
Ogura made his first significant move towards the lead shortly after, but his time at the top was brief as Fermín Aldeguer from Beta Tools SpeedUp quickly snatched the lead. Aldeguer maintained the front position for over 15 minutes, showcasing his consistency and skill.
As the session entered its final stages, the leaderboard saw constant changes. Arbolino reclaimed the lead before the closing minutes, setting the stage for a dramatic finale. In a thrilling sequence, the lead changed hands four times within the last five minutes.
Eventually, it was Ogura's remarkable pace that settled the contest. His record-breaking lap of 1m33.690s not only secured him the fastest time of the day but also established a new benchmark at the Mandalika circuit. Arón Canet of Fantic Racing/Kalex finished closely behind with a time just 0.057 seconds slower, taking second place. Arbolino rounded out the top three, enhancing his earlier efforts with a commendable performance.
Fermín Aldeguer's earlier efforts earned him a respectable fourth place, while Somkiat Chantra from Idemitsu Honda Team Asia/Kalex completed the top five. Jake Dixon of CFMOTO Inde Aspar/Kalex and Senna Agius of Liqui Moly Husqvarna Intact GP/Kalex secured sixth and seventh places respectively, both finishing 0.359 seconds off Ogura’s leading time.
As the paddock gears up for further sessions, the competitive spirit and high performance exhibited in Practice 1 have set high expectations for the weekend's remaining events at the Indonesian Grand Prix.
