Erik Estrada Warns About the Dangers and Potential of Artificial Intelligence
London - Renowned actor Erik Estrada, known widely for his role in the television series "CHiPs" and as the host of the faith-based home improvement series "Divine Renovation," has spoken out about the dual-edged nature of artificial intelligence (AI). In a recent interview, Estrada, 75, issued a stark warning about AI's potential to cause significant harm while also acknowledging its substantial benefits.
During the interview with Fox News Digital, Estrada acknowledged the positive applications of AI, emphasising its potential to create good jobs and goodwill. However, he expressed significant concern about the technology's misuse, particularly in creating deepfakes – falsified images, videos, or audio designed to misrepresent individuals or events.
"Just like the Internet and cell phones, AI has a positive side that can be harnessed for beneficial purposes," Estrada stated. "Unfortunately, the same technology can be used nefariously, causing significant harm to people’s lives and reputations."
Estrada, who has been personally affected by deepfake technology, highlighted how AI has been used to create deceptive content featuring him, endorsing products or participating in scenarios he never authorised. He mentioned specific scenarios where AI-created content could misrepresent him in absurd and damaging ways.
"Deepfakes can be used in very destructive ways," Estrada noted. "They can create endorsements I never agreed to, or worse, place me in compromising or humiliating situations. This misuse can seriously damage someone's life and career."
Estrada's concern isn't solely theoretical. As a former police officer and current deputy sheriff in Virginia, Estrada is part of the Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) task force. He actively works undercover to apprehend online predators and has taken particular interest in tracking down scammers using his likeness.
"I'm involved in efforts to combat deepfake scammers who have impersonated me on social media platforms like Facebook," Estrada revealed. "These individuals prey on unsuspecting victims, and though it's a challenging battle, we're committed to bringing them to justice."
Apart from his law enforcement efforts, Estrada has continued his entertainment career with "Divine Renovation," a faith-based home improvement reality series. The show, spearheaded by executive producer Monty Hobbs, merges home improvement with a spiritual mission, aiming to assist families in need through collaboration with nonprofits, local businesses, and communities.
The first season of "Divine Renovation" premiered in July 2023, filmed in Wilmington, North Carolina, and available on multiple platforms including Prime Video, Google Play, and iTunes. The second season, now streaming, was shot in Torrington, Connecticut. Estrada described the new season as heartwarming, featuring segments that include aiding a shelter and modifying a home for a police officer's family.
Reflecting on his life and career, Estrada spoke about the grounding influence of his Christian faith, how it helps him navigate personal and professional challenges. He emphasised the importance of prayer and seeking guidance from God, especially when confronted with difficult situations.
"I find talking to my inner self, which is God for me, very helpful," Estrada shared. "It brings me solace and the strength to face emotional and mental challenges."
"Divine Renovation" continues to stream on various platforms, including Amazon Prime, Roku, and Tubi.
As AI technology continues to evolve, Estrada's insights emphasise the critical balance between innovation and ethical responsibility, spotlighting the need for vigilance against its misuse while promoting its positive applications.
