GE Vernova Secures Key Role in U.S. Department of Energy Hydrogen Safety Project

GREENVILLE, SC, USA – In a significant development for clean energy, GE Vernova has been selected for award negotiations by the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE) Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technologies Office (HFTO). This endeavour, spearheaded by GE Vernova, aims to overcome permitting and safety challenges for hydrogen (H2) deployment through the use of an advanced AI assistant.

The primary objective of this project is to identify and address the main obstacles encountered during the siting, permitting, and installation processes across the hydrogen value chain, from production to end-use. To achieve this, the project will employ an AI assistant focused on ensuring safe H2 handling and providing comprehensive training on hydrogen safety.

GE Vernova will lead a project team known as "H2Net." This consortium includes renowned institutions such as Clemson University and the Roper Mountain Science Center, both based in Greenville, South Carolina. The project is poised to receive approximately $1 million in federal funding from the DOE, pending the finalisation of award negotiations.

Central to the H2Net programme is the development of an AI assistant named HySAGE (Hydrogen Smart Assistant for Governance Execution). HySAGE is designed to be meticulously trained on critical documents relevant to safe H2 handling and permitting processes. This tool will be validated against the stringent requirements and past experiences at GE Vernova’s Gas Turbine Manufacturing and Technology Center, also located in Greenville, SC.

HySAGE aims to offer extensive modelling capabilities, incorporating necessary codes, standards, and a variety of environmental scenarios, thereby enhancing its versatility and accuracy in real-world applications.

Speaking on this significant project, U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm stated, “These investments in clean hydrogen showcase the Administration’s commitment to making clean energy a win-win for all Americans—by contributing to a sustainable zero-carbon future, while boosting economic opportunities across the country. These projects will work hand in hand with historic investments in the Hydrogen Hubs and electrolysis technologies to accelerate progress towards a clean hydrogen economy that will deliver good-paying, high-quality jobs and accelerate a renaissance of American manufacturing.”

The initiative underscores a broader strategy to harmonise environmental sustainability with economic growth, marking a milestone in the transition towards a clean hydrogen economy. As the nation makes strides towards renewable energy sources, the creation and implementation of solutions like HySAGE are expected to be crucial in making these advances both safe and efficient.
