Innovative Heart Imaging Technology Transforming Heart Disease Diagnosis at Creighton University Medical Center

OMAH, Nebraska – In a groundbreaking development in the medical field, Creighton University Medical Center has introduced a new advanced medical imaging and AI technology called HeartFlow. This innovative tool is designed to help doctors diagnose heart disease more effectively and accurately than traditional methods such as stress tests and MRIs.

Thomas Kolterman, a 57-year-old Nebraska resident, is one of the many individuals benefiting from this state-of-the-art technology. Kolterman, who has heart disease, related his experience with HeartFlow, emphasizing its effectiveness in providing a precise diagnosis that eluded other medical tests. “July 14th was just a day that I started feeling a little off, probably about 8 or 9:00 in the morning,” Kolterman recounted. After multiple visits to the doctor, where MRIs and stress tests returned inconclusive results, his condition was often misattributed to heartburn, gastritis, or just a bad day.

HeartFlow offers a significant advancement in cardiac diagnostics. The technology leverages advanced medical imaging and artificial intelligence to create a personalized visual model of each patient’s heart. This model is color-coded, enabling doctors to pinpoint exactly which coronary arteries are narrowed and to what extent blood flow is restricted. Dr. Toufik Haddad, an interventional cardiologist at Bergan Mercy Hospital, expressed his enthusiasm for the new technology. "The model provides me with a color-coded visualisation that clearly shows the blockages, their severity, and how critically the blood flow is compromised in the affected artery."

Dr. Haddad highlighted the reliability and precision of HeartFlow. "The number we got with HeartFlow was 0.79 in one of his arteries, the Widowmaker. I performed the same test invasively in the catheterisation lab, and it returned a number of 0.79. It was shocking, but highly impressive,” he explained.

HeartFlow not only enhances the precision in diagnosing heart conditions but also promises to advance the overall study and understanding of cardiac health. Its implementation at Bergan Mercy Hospital marks a significant step forward in cardiac care in Omaha, opening new avenues for treatment and patient management.
