Insurance Agents Express Cautious Interest in AI
A recent study by Liberty Mutual and Safeco reveals a cautious yet growing interest in artificial intelligence (AI) among independent insurance agency leaders and team members. The 2024 Agent-Customer Connection Study, titled "Benchmarking Agent Attitudes on AI," surveyed 1,133 independent insurance agency personnel and 1,110 insurance consumers to gauge sentiment towards AI integration in the insurance sector.
The survey results indicate that while there is a budding interest in AI, scepticism still prevails. Only a small fraction—six percent—of agency principals have currently implemented AI into their operations. However, a more substantial 36% indicated they are likely to incorporate AI within the next five years, suggesting a cautious optimism about its potential benefits.
Despite this interest, there remains a significant trust gap. Merely 17% of agents reported trusting AI, highlighting widespread reservations despite the technology's growing ubiquity across various industries. The survey unveiled a split in perceptions, with 25% of agents viewing AI as an opportunity and 27% perceiving it as a threat. The largest group, representing 49% of respondents, remained neutral, neither seeing AI as a significant threat nor a noteworthy opportunity.
The hesitancy surrounding AI's integration underscores the complexity and uncertainties associated with new technological advancements in traditional sectors like insurance. These findings provide a window into the careful deliberation and cautious optimism that characterises the current landscape of AI adoption among insurance professionals.
As the technology continues to advance and its applications become more transparent and understood, attitudes towards AI may continue to evolve, potentially bridging the current trust gap and fostering broader acceptance in the industry.
