Meta's Ray-Ban Smart Glasses Receive Enhanced AI Features: Updates Announced at Connect Event
Silicon Valley, California – Meta's Ray-Ban Meta glasses have captured the spotlight as the first successful conjunction of chic eyewear and practical artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Situated as fashionable wearables with sleek Ray-Ban aesthetics, they outshine bulkier, previous attempts at mixed reality eyewear. The glasses already boast in-built AI capabilities that answer questions and identify objects via embedded cameras, with users particularly enjoying hands-free photo and video capture through voice commands.
At the Meta Connect event held today, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the latest software updates for these smart glasses, promising to augment their intelligent features. Zuckerberg emphasised the dual requirements of aesthetic appeal and functional capabilities in such devices. “The reality is that most of the time you're not using smart functionality, so people want to have something on their face that they're proud of and that looks good and that's, you know, designed in a really nice way,” he stated. “So they're great glasses. We keep updating the software and building out the ecosystem and they keep on getting smarter and capable of more things.”
The enhancements to the Ray-Ban Meta glasses include new AI-powered voice functionalities, although these are minimal in scope. The glasses, already equipped to perform tasks at voice command, will now be able to set reminders based on visual identification. For instance, a user can look at a book and instruct the glasses to remind them to purchase it the following week, with Meta AI accurately recognising the object and setting the reminder.
An upcoming feature will soon enable live transcription services, translating speech from various languages in real-time—though details on the accuracy and operational efficiency of this feature, given past performance, remain under scrutiny.
In addition to the AI updates, Meta is expanding its offerings with new frame and lens colours. Options now include transition lenses that adapt their shading in response to sunlight levels, enhancing both functionality and style.
While Meta has not specified an exact release date for these new features, it assures they will be available within the year, indicating an imminent rollout with only three months of 2023 remaining.
Beyond the smart glasses, Meta also showcased the new Meta Quest 3S, a more affordable variant of its mixed reality headsets, and demonstrated a range of new AI capabilities across its platforms, including updates to its Meta AI and Llama large language models.
The announcements underscore Meta's commitment to integrating AI seamlessly into everyday wearables, further solidifying its position in the technology and fashion landscape.
