Field Trials in California to Commence in 2025 with CRB Collaboration

Nanovel, an innovative Israeli AgTech startup, has announced the debut of the world's first AI-powered autonomous fruit-harvesting robot, designed specifically for the citrus industry. The cutting-edge technology is engineered to navigate dense foliage and selectively pick fruit, addressing significant challenges in the global fresh fruit market.

The development has garnered recognition and support from the California Citrus Research Board (CRB), which has signed a $900,000 non-dilutive funding agreement with Nanovel. This partnership will facilitate field trials in California, beginning in the spring of 2025, with the aim of delivering a robot to the CRB for comprehensive evaluation and use post-trials.

Addressing Labor Shortages and Operational Costs

Isaac Mazor, the founder and CEO of Nanovel, emphasised that the new technology addresses two critical issues faced by fruit growers globally: labor shortages and rising operational costs. These challenges, highlighted by a Western Growers survey, have been major concerns for specialty crop farmers.

"Our mission is to secure the affordability of fresh fruit through autonomous harvesting," stated Mazor. He further elaborated on the company's ambitions to implement this technology across major global citrus markets, including the U.S., Spain, and Italy, with the aim of setting a new standard for fresh market harvesting, while ensuring economic viability for growers.

Breakthrough in Harvesting Technology

Nanovel's autonomous robot, designed initially to harvest oranges, uses advanced vision technology, AI, and edge computing. This enables the robot to identify, evaluate, and selectively pick fruit that meets the desired quality standards. Featuring multiple telescopic arms, equipped with vacuum grippers and cutters, the robot carefully cradles and trims the fruit to avoid any potential damage during the picking process.

The robot operates autonomously and can function continuously, day and night, thereby optimizing productivity and allowing growers to harvest fruit at the best possible times, which can enhance the quality and market value of the produce. The current version of the robot is towed by a tractor, with plans for future iterations to include autonomous navigation capabilities.

Enhancing Efficiency with Real-Time Data

In addition to automating the harvesting process, Nanovel’s robot provides real-time data essential for decision-making in packing, marketing, and agronomic activities. Its edge computing capability ensures that data is gathered and analysed in real-time, offering growers insightful information to further optimise their operations.

Labor savings constitute a substantial benefit of this technology. Manual fruit harvesting, which can account for up to 50% of annual cultural costs in the citrus industry in developed nations, presents a significant financial burden. By automating this process, Nanovel’s technology can substantially lower operational costs, while resolving the persistent issue of sourcing seasonal labor.

The robot also enhances worker safety by eliminating the need for laborers to engage in the hazardous task of picking fruit from ladders, thereby significantly reducing the risk of accidents and injuries.

CRB’s Support and Future Prospects

The California Citrus Research Board’s endorsement and funding manifest the substantial potential seen in Nanovel’s technology. The $900,000 funding will support crucial field trials in partnership with leading citrus growers in California, set for the spring of 2025. Following the trials, a robot will be delivered to the CRB for further assessment and use.
