P&G Harnesses AI to Innovate Cold Water Cleaning Solutions in Collaboration with Basecamp Research

In an ambitious stride towards sustainable laundry solutions, Procter & Gamble (P&G) has announced a partnership with Basecamp Research to develop high-performance cleaning enzymes optimised for cold water conditions. This initiative aims to revolutionise the way consumers approach laundry, potentially reducing the environmental impact associated with hot water washing.

The endeavour focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to mimic natural adaptations seen in organisms thriving in cold environments. Basecamp Research, a company at the forefront of integrating AI with biological sciences, contributes its pioneering "foundational biological dataset purpose-built for AI". This dataset has been meticulously compiled through global collaborations in biodiversity-rich regions, encompassing genomic information from a variety of extreme conditions, including glaciers and geysers.

Basecamp Research’s AI platform, underpinned by this extensive dataset, specialises in the creation of advanced proteins tailored to perform specific functions across diverse environmental conditions. Enzymes—biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions within living organisms—are central to this partnership. The focus will be on designing enzymes capable of efficiently dissolving stains on clothes and surfaces even at lower temperatures.

Dr Oliver Vince, co-founder of Basecamp Research, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We’ll leverage our unparalleled view of the tree of life and our breakthrough AI platform that makes protein design programmable. We’re excited to partner with leaders in this field and demonstrate a fundamentally different approach.”

P&G has been actively promoting the benefits of cold water washing. According to the company’s product lifecycle assessment, heating water accounts for nearly 70% of the carbon footprint of a laundry cycle during consumer use. In an effort to encourage consumers to shift to cold water washing, P&G launched the #TurntoCold campaign in 2021. The campaign featured North American celebrities Ice-T and ‘Stone Cold’ Steve Austin, who engaged in humorous tactics to persuade consumers to adopt cold water washing with Tide detergent.

Dr Phil Souter, Senior Director of Laundry Research and Development at P&G, emphasised the significance of the new partnership, stating, “We are pleased to be partnering with Basecamp Research on this initiative, working together to develop new solutions by combining their unique view of nature and AI capability with our extensive innovation mastery to deliver a superior consumer experience.”

The primary objective of this collaboration is not only to enhance cleaning efficacy at lower water temperatures but also to contribute positively to environmental sustainability and reduce consumers’ heating costs. By refining the cold water enzyme technology, P&G hopes to make cold water washing a more attractive and effective option, thereby mitigating the need for hot water in the laundry process.

As consumers become increasingly environmentally conscious, this partnership represents a significant step in the realm of sustainable living, providing innovative solutions that align with growing environmental stewardship ideals.
