Polygon (MATIC) Rolls Out Ahmedabad Upgrade on PoS Mainnet

Polygon (MATIC) has officially implemented the Ahmedabad upgrade on its Proof-of-Stake (PoS) mainnet, according to an announcement on polygon.technology.

The Ahmedabad upgrade, which entered the live phase at block #62278656, introduces several advancements aimed at enhancing the experience for both developers and end-users. The upgrade, tested on the Amoy testnet for a fortnight, ensures new, improved functionalities are available for the Polygon community.

One of the most notable changes with this upgrade is the alteration of the token symbol on Polygon PoS. The symbol has transitioned from MATIC to POL and from WMATIC to WPOL, signifying a significant shift in the token's representation.

Enhanced Features for Developers

The Ahmedabad upgrade introduces increased code size capabilities along with several other improvements. Notably, the code size limit has been expanded from 24KB to 32KB, as stipulated in Polygon Improvement Proposal 30 (PIP-30). This enhancement enables developers to create more complex decentralised applications (dApps) without resorting to alternative and often convoluted development methods.

Improved Network Observability and Bridge Transactions

Another key feature in the upgrade is better handling of gas pricing and bridge transactions. Addressed under Proposal 36 (PIP-36), this includes fixing a gas pricing issue that arose after Ethereum's Berlin hardfork, which had caused some POL transactions (previously MATIC) to freeze in the plasma bridge. The new system also allows for replaying failed state syncs, thus improving the efficiency and observability of the network's plasma bridge. This improvement aims to reduce the incidence of stuck bridge transactions, a point that has been a pain point for users.

Token Symbol Change

The transition from MATIC to POL and WMATIC to WPOL is encapsulated in Proposal 45 (PIP-45). This change aligns with the recent migration strategy from MATIC to POL, intending to provide a streamlined and unified token ecosystem.

Smooth Transition for Node Operators

All necessary preparations for this upgrade have been completed by node operators, including infrastructure providers and validators. They have updated to the necessary versions of Bor (>= v1.4.0) and Erigon (>= 2.60.8), ensuring the system's smooth transition.
