Samsung Unveils the Budget-Friendly Galaxy S24 FE with Emphasis on AI Features
New York, October 3, 2023 - In a strategic move to offer advanced technology at a more accessible price point, Samsung has introduced the Galaxy S24 FE, priced at $650. The announcement was made during a launch event held at Samsung's flagship store, Samsung 837, in New York. This new model aims to bridge the gap between budget-friendly and high-end devices by incorporating features previously found in more expensive models.
The Galaxy S24 FE will be available for orders starting October 3. Like its predecessors in the Galaxy S24 line, this device boasts several Galaxy AI features. These include Live Translation for on-the-fly language conversion, Circle to Search for quick image-based queries, Generative Edit for removing unwanted elements from photos, and Note Assist for formatting, translating, and summarising notes. Samsung has committed to providing seven years of software and security updates for the Galaxy S24 FE, aligning with what is offered for the standard Galaxy S24.
A significant aspect of the Galaxy S24 FE is its focus on artificial intelligence, an area Samsung has increasingly emphasised. This emphasis parallels Apple’s recent unveiling of Apple Intelligence in the iPhone 16, showcasing a trend among top tech companies to weave AI deeply into their mobile offerings.
The specifications of the Galaxy S24 FE reveal a robust piece of technology. It features a 6.7-inch AMOLED display and is powered by a 4,700-mAh battery. The camera system includes a 50-megapixel main camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom, and a 12-megapixel ultrawide lens, presenting a combination that mirrors the camera capabilities of the standard Galaxy S24. The latter, however, offers a 10-megapixel telephoto camera alongside the similar main and ultrawide sensors. Additionally, the higher-end S24 benefits from Samsung's new ProVisual camera engine, an AI-driven tool designed to enhance image detail and texture.
One notable departure in the Galaxy S24 FE is its use of the Samsung Exynos 2400e processor, opposed to the Qualcomm processors employed in the flagship S24 devices and the previous S23 FE. Samsung has previously integrated Exynos processors within its more affordable Galaxy A series. The choice to utilise their proprietary technology likely contributes to the lower cost of the Galaxy S24 FE. Further expanding its lineup of value-oriented devices, Samsung also introduced the Galaxy Watch FE during the same event. Priced at $200, with an LTE model starting at $250, this smartwatch reinforces Samsung’s commitment to providing cost-effective tech solutions.
This year has seen Samsung heavily promote its Galaxy AI suite across various devices, with the Galaxy S24 FE serving as a prime example of this direction. Highlighting the prevalence of AI in the industry, both Apple and Google similarly focused on AI advancements during their recent phone launches.
However, consumer sentiment on AI features remains mixed. According to a CNET survey conducted with YouGov, 25% of smartphone owners find AI features unhelpful. Instead, these consumers prioritise longer battery life and increased storage when considering upgrades.
