Small Businesses Increasingly Embrace AI Tools

NEW YORK (AP) – The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) among small businesses is sharply rising as these enterprises leverage advanced technologies to enhance efficiency and reduce costs. According to a recent survey conducted by The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and Teneo, an overwhelming 98% of small businesses now report using AI-enabled tools.

The survey highlights a significant uptick in the use of generative AI tools, with 40% of small businesses employing technologies such as chatbots and image creation systems, nearly doubling from the previous year's figures. Business owners acknowledge that these tools are instrumental in saving on personnel expenses and allowing more productive use of time, although they emphasise the necessity of human oversight to refine AI outputs.

"AI Enabling Competitive Edge"

Jordan Crenshaw, Senior Vice President of the U.S. Chamber's Technology Engagement Center, remarked, “AI allows small businesses – who many times do not have the staff or resources of their competitors – to punch above their weight.” Crenshaw lauded the foresight of small businesses in adopting these technologies, fostering innovation and resilience in a competitive market.

Randy Speckman, owner of Randy Speckman Design, a web design agency based in San Diego, shared his journey of integrating AI into his operations. After experimenting with several tools, Speckman opted for Conversion.ai and Copy.ai, which are now integral to his company’s production of blog posts, email newsletters, and social media content. These tools have significantly reduced the time and effort required from his seven-member team, maintaining a steady flow of high-quality content and negating the need to hire additional writers. Nonetheless, Speckman notes that initial AI drafts still require human review and fine-tuning.

"Future Growth and Technology Plans"

The survey further revealed that a substantial 91% of small businesses using AI believe it will drive future business growth. Additionally, 77% of small business owners plan to adopt emerging technologies such as AI and the metaverse in the near future.

Amanda Reineke, founder of Notice Ninja, a digital compliance company based in Phoenix, has developed an AI-powered platform to automate the management of incoming tax notices. Her platform automates data capture and routing, streamlining workflows for her 15-employee firm. Reineke underscores the importance of implementing AI thoughtfully, noting that while AI can significantly enhance efficiency, it is not a substitute for human expertise but rather a complement to it.

"Broader Technology Integration"

The survey also noted a general increase in the use of technology platforms among small businesses. Nearly half (47%) of business owners reported using four or more technology platforms, up from 39% the previous year, and over a quarter indicated using six or more platforms.

Jan Watermann, owner of Waterman Consulting in St. Petersburg, Florida, employs tools like Jasper AI and SurferSEO to streamline content creation and optimisation. Watermann praised the efficiency brought by these AI tools but cautioned that human creativity and strategic oversight are crucial to achieving the best results.

The burgeoning adoption of AI among small businesses showcases a growing trend towards integrating sophisticated technologies to stay competitive and innovative in an increasingly digital landscape.
