Spain Intensifies Preparedness Amid Growing AI Cybersecurity Threats

Malaga, Spain – Spain's security agencies are ramping up efforts to counter the increasing threat of artificial intelligence-driven cyber attacks by hostile states. This heightened state of readiness was underscored at a recent cyber defence conference hosted by Google in Malaga, where high-ranking military officers and intelligence services highlighted the escalating nature of such cyber threats.

During the conference, Enrique Pérez de Tena, a frigate captain affiliated with the Joint Cyber Defence Command (JCDC), emphasised the constantly evolving battlefront of the internet. "A war is fought every day," he asserted, reflecting the ongoing and relentless nature of cyber conflicts in the digital realm.

Spain has established a robust framework to counter these threats, spearheaded by three major agencies: the National Cybersecurity Institute (NCI), the JCDC, and the National Cryptological Centre (NCC). These organisations collaborate to safeguard national security against a backdrop of evolving cyber warfare tactics.

Cristina González Pitarch, Google's director of cloud security for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, provided insights into the modus operandi of cyber attackers from hostile states. She noted that nations like Russia and China are leveraging cyber attacks in distinct but equally threatening ways. "We see many attacks from Russia focused on Ukraine but also against diplomatic headquarters of other EU countries," she detailed. "Their mission is to destabilise and get money. Those attacks can be very lucrative and Russia uses them to finance itself."

In contrast, cyber attacks originating from China typically target "essential infrastructures" or "small things we use every day - what we call the Internet of Things." This includes disruptive actions against critical systems and everyday technologies integral to daily life and national infrastructure.

Carlos Abad, a cybersecurity expert from the NCC, highlighted the challenge posed by the rapid pace of technological advancements. The speed at which technology evolves complicates efforts to mount a robust and timely defence against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.

Artificial intelligence stands at the forefront of both offensive and defensive cyber strategies. "We have to learn to use it to be ready for what comes," Pérez de Tena remarked, stressing the necessity for security services to be adept in AI technologies to effectively counter AI-driven cyber attacks.

As Spain fortifies its defences and enhances collaboration across its cybersecurity agencies, the focus remains on staying ahead of potential threats and ensuring the resilience of national security infrastructures against an ever-changing cyber landscape.
