Theta Labs Unveils EdgeCloud for Mobile to Harness Android Devices’ GPU Power
Theta Labs, the innovative team behind the blockchain-based Theta Network, has unveiled a groundbreaking new initiative: EdgeCloud for Mobile. This new app, available on Google Play, allows Android users to contribute their spare GPU power to the Theta EdgeCloud network, earning TFUEL tokens in the process.
The application is designed to engage the built-in computing power of the estimated 3.9 billion active Android devices worldwide, thus creating a vast, decentralised cloud computing network. The core functionality of this network leverages the Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Network (DePIN), which aims to reduce GPU-intensive task costs by over 50% when compared to traditional cloud computing providers. It offers scalable, decentralised AI model training and inference services, which are pivotal for advancements in media, healthcare, and financial sectors.
Theta Labs has implemented a novel video object detection AI model named VOD_AI into this system. VOD_AI emulates the human visual cortex's operation and analyses video frames to detect objects by drawing bounding boxes around them. This technology represents a significant leap forward in computer vision, enabling consumer-grade Android devices to perform complex computations at the edge of the network.
Mitch Liu, co-founder and CEO of Theta Labs, highlighted the substantial expansion this new approach will bring: “By growing from 30,000 computing nodes to millions of mobile devices, this move significantly enhances the capabilities of our network. Each device adds to the power of our distributed GPU.” The inclusion of these smartphones essentially turns them into part of Theta Lab's decentralised node network, vastly increasing computational power and operational scale.
The EdgeCloud app offers a user-friendly interface that enables device owners to share their resources in a controlled manner, specifying that contributions occur only when the device is connected to wifi. This ensures minimal impact on battery life and data consumption while still allowing users to generate passive income in the form of TFUEL tokens. These tokens have seen significant appreciation, with their value increasing by 98.8% over the past year.
The platform appears effective at harnessing collective computational power for AI-based tasks. For instance, if 30,000 Android devices were to dedicate their GPU power for a mere eight hours daily, this would generate an impressive 240,000 hours of computation in a single day.
Additionally, the EdgeCloud platform does not impose geographic limitations, accepting any Android phone or tablet produced post-2020. Academic institutions like Seoul Women’s University have already begun to utilise the network's capabilities for advanced AI research, reinforcing the platform’s potential for significant impact across various sectors.
