Tri Hita Karana Tower Reaches New Heights in Bali
Bali, Indonesia – Renowned French architect Arthur Mamou-Mani has unveiled a striking new landmark on Bali’s Nyanyi Beach with the completion of the 30-metre-high Tri Hita Karana (THK) Tower. Nestled within the upscale resort of Nuanu City, this architectural marvel is set to open its doors to the public tomorrow.
Inspired by the natural beauty of Bali, the THK Tower serves as a canvas for an interactive artificial intelligence (AI) art installation. Constructed from flexible rattan and durable ulin, also known as ironwood, the tower not only withstands the harsh coastal environment but also showcases a dynamic and intricate design reflecting Bali’s lush forests and rich history.
Central to the construction is the commitment to circularity and sustainability. Mamou-Mani emphasised, “A key part of the process was understanding the lifecycle of every strip of rattan and ulin that we reclaimed. Circularity was key to this project.” He further highlighted the tower’s versatility, stating, “Although it is a permanent landmark, it has been designed to be disassembled, moved, evolved, and broken down in an environmentally friendly manner.”
An intriguing aspect of the tower is its evolving appearance. The rattan material will change colour over time, augmenting the notion that the structure is a "living, breathing piece of art."
At dusk, the tower will become a spectacle of light and projection, courtesy of the collaborative efforts of Bali and Dubai-based multimedia production company, Delivered. These AI-driven light shows are designed to espouse the sustainable ethos of the tower. Delivered’s founders, Nastia Human and Alex Mubert, noted, “The algorithm at the heart of the display is a living entity, constantly evolving, ensuring that no two nightly shows are ever alike.”
The light show leverages the talents of AI artists Pablo Alpe, Ben Helm, Maksim Ha, and Aizek, employing over 1,000 light fixtures and 18 projectors housed in 12 mini towers surrounding the structure. An in-built custom sound system further enriches the sensory experience. Additionally, viewers can interact with the installation through a dedicated website, making each interaction unique and personalized.
Arthur Mamou-Mani, who heads the London-based studio Mamou-Mani Architects, is recognized for his prior works including the "Galaxia" temple at the Burning Man festival and the "Aurora" installation at the Design Museum’s Waste Age exhibition. His latest creation, the THK Tower, stands as a testament to his innovative approach to architecture, weaving together elements of sustainability, technology, and artistic expression.
The THK Tower in Nuanu City is set to become a prominent feature of Bali’s landscape, continuously morphing with the passage of time and engaging visitors through its dynamic light displays and interactive art.
