Tyanna J. Buie’s "Revisionist History" Exhibition Embraces AI to Reimagine Family Legacy
Chicago, IL—Intertwining humour with technology, artist Tyanna J. Buie presents a groundbreaking exploration of her family’s past in her solo exhibition, “Revisionist History”. Held at cam.contemporarie, the exhibition runs through October 5, offering visitors a whimsical and thought-provoking journey into an AI-generated alternative history.
Buie’s curiosity and creative prowess are on full display as she dives into a tapestry of what could have been, juxtaposing her family members' images with centuries-old Dutch royal portraits she found on the e-commerce platform 1stDibs. Her unique approach combines deeply personal elements with the transformative capabilities of artificial intelligence, positioning the show as a quintessential intersection of traditional art and modern technology.
Born to African royal lineage tracing back to the ancient kingdom of Nyala, Buie reimagines her descendants as powerful figures through the lens of Afrofuturism. Using AI, including text generated by ChatGPT, Buie crafts a narrative of leadership and migration, capturing a family saga that spans from a distant land to the urban landscapes of Chicago and Milwaukee. This reimagined lineage commemorates the efforts of four visionary leaders through a short film scripted by the artificial intelligence platform.
The gallery features four large-scale print sculptures representing these legendary figures, each score with rich details including their meaningful names, cherished artefacts, and significant homes in Englewood and Roseland. These artworks stand as a testament to Buie’s ingenuity and her ability to meld fragmented family history with a creative reimagination inspired by AI.
During a conversation with fellow artist Shonna Pryor at the gallery, Buie shared insights into how her midwestern upbringing, spanning Chicago, Milwaukee, and Detroit, has influenced her artistic journey. Her time in Detroit, in particular, deepened her appreciation for Afrofuturism and its implications for the future of Black lives. Despite the playful pivot "Revisionist History" takes, Buie’s art remains profoundly engaged with social issues and deeply personal narratives, staunchly aiming to create an envisioned history and future.
Tyanna J. Buie now resides in Providence, Rhode Island, where she serves as an associate professor in printmaking at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her work in "Revisionist History" not only entertains but also empowers viewers to find their own meanings within the reconfigured narratives she and AI have spun, urging a reconsideration of historical constructs and personal ancestry.
“Revisionist History” can be visited at cam.contemporarie, located at 2233 S. Throop, #920, with opening hours from Monday to Friday between noon and 4 PM, and on Saturdays from noon to 3 PM. Additionally, a special "sound activation" event will be held on October 4 from 5 PM to 8 PM at the same venue.
