AMD's Remarkable Rise Under Lisa Su: AI and Strategic Acquisitions at the Helm

Silicon Valley, 27 Sept 2023 – Since taking the reins as CEO of Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) in 2014, Lisa Su has steered the company through one of the most impressive turnarounds in Silicon Valley. Under her leadership, AMD’s share price has surged from a modest $3 to over $160, giving the firm a market valuation surpassing $260 billion. The dramatic transformation is largely attributed to Su’s strategic focus on the company’s core strengths, coupled with tactical partnerships and adept acquisitions.

When Su assumed the role, AMD was struggling with a diminishing market share in the highly competitive semiconductor industry. Her initial strategy focussed on enhancing AMD’s position in high-performance computing by developing central processing units (CPUs) for laptops and PCs, as well as graphics processors for gaming consoles and PCs. Key partnerships with tech giants, including Sony and Microsoft, helped stabilise AMD's position in the market.

A noteworthy pivot in AMD's strategy came through a series of high-profile acquisitions. In recent times, AMD completed the purchase of competitor Xilinx in the largest semiconductor deal ever, in addition to the $1.9 billion acquisition of data centre networking company Pensando. More recently, AMD has expanded its footprint in the artificial intelligence (AI) sector by acquiring ZT Systems, a maker of AI and cloud computing data centre equipment, and Silo AI, Europe’s largest private AI lab.

The strategic move towards AI is underscored by the launch of AMD’s fastest ramping product ever, the MI300 AI chips, introduced in December 2023. The MI300X chip in particular is poised to rival Nvidia’s dominant H100, marking AMD’s significant entry into the AI market. Lisa Su has described the MI300X as “the most advanced AI accelerator in the industry.”

Commenting on the company's future growth, Su emphasised the importance of AI in their product portfolio, stressing a comprehensive approach that integrates AI across all aspects of computing. “AI is going to be throughout our entire product portfolio,” she stated, illustrating her vision of pervasive AI embedded in everything from personal devices to retail operations and cloud computing.

Su's strategic vision extends beyond product innovation. She places significant value on acquisitions to bring in fresh talent and intellectual property. The acquisition of Silo AI, for instance, aligns with AMD’s goal of enhancing its AI capabilities, leveraging a team of 300 specialised engineers and scientists to drive AI innovation. According to Su, these acquisitions are integral to AMD's objective of delivering end-to-end solutions in AI, combining hardware, software, and implementation services.

The CEO’s adept handling of geopolitical concerns affecting the semiconductor industry, particularly the complexities of export regulations, has also been instrumental in maintaining AMD's global edge. Su acknowledges the importance of adhering to export controls while continuing to target expansive international markets, including China.

As one of the few women leading a major tech firm, Su is acutely aware of the underrepresentation of women in the industry. She advocates for greater inclusion by providing significant opportunities to women in technology, emphasising the sector's meritocratic nature. Through initiatives like the Global Semiconductor Alliance’s women's leadership programme, Su hopes to inspire more women to pursue and thrive in tech careers.

Looking ahead, Su remains optimistic about the future of technology and its economic implications. She believes AI will be a fundamental driver of productivity, underscoring the need for increased computing capability. With her visionary leadership, AMD is well-positioned to capitalise on the burgeoning AI revolution.

In a comprehensive interview with TIME on 2 August 2023, Su delved into AMD’s strategy, the transformative potential of AI, and her commitment to fostering female leadership in the tech industry. Her insights reflect a deep understanding of the technology arc and a clear roadmap for leveraging AI to address global challenges and enhance productivity.
