Gridware's Cutting-Edge Technology Takes on Wildfires in the US
Walnut Creek, CA - As each fire season approaches, residents brace themselves for the potential devastation of wildfires and the impact of prolonged power outages. Tim Barat, a former lineman with firsthand experience of wildfire impacts, is well-acquainted with this anxiety. His inspiration for innovation arose from a tragic event known as 'Black Saturday' in Australia, where 50 fires ignited by power lines claimed 187 lives in a single day.
Galvanised by his experiences, Barat teamed up with UC Berkeley engineering classmate Hall Chen to co-found Gridware. The duo developed a solar-powered sensor system designed to monitor utility lines and poles for signs of potential danger. Using artificial intelligence, their system identifies vibrations and anomalies that may signal a fire risk. Once detected, the technology alerts utility companies, which can then take immediate action to cut power to the affected lines.
"We like to think of the grid as a guitar where the conductors are the strings and poles are the frets," explains Hall Chen, Gridware’s Chief Technology Officer. By comparing the physical events impacting conductors to distinguishable vibrations, the technology can identify incidents such as branches falling on lines, which can lead to ignitions.
Demonstrating the system at the Richmond field station, Barat explained the typical scenario they aim to mitigate. "This happens hundreds of times even in a 24-hour period where a branch will break and it will fall on the lines just like this and it remains there on the lines for up to hours before it actually ignites and only when it ignites does it fall down to the ground and then start a fire," he described. The technology detects the moment vegetation contacts the lines, enabling timely interventions.
Beyond preventing wildfires, Gridware's innovation is instrumental in expediting electricity restoration post-outage. Knowing the exact location and nature of an incident allows utility crews to target their efforts, making repairs swiftly and reducing downtime for affected residents.
Gridware’s sensors extend capabilities beyond fire detection, monitoring real-time environmental factors such as temperature, pressure, wind, and humidity. In California, these sensors are placed in the highest-risk areas, covering a thousand miles of power grid.
"I grew up in California," says Chen, reflecting on the wider impact of their work. "To be able to actually make a difference for the communities around my home state and other states as well around the country—it’s good for the soul."
The effectiveness of Gridware’s innovation was confirmed when a utility company reported back that their alert had prevented a forest fire. "That’s a very emotional experience," recalls Barat.
Passionate about fostering a safer future from wildfires, Barat and Chen continue to drive their mission forward. Currently, Gridware has installed approximately 13,000 sensors across eight states, partnering with 18 utility companies, including PG&E, demonstrating a growing reach and commitment to safeguarding communities nationwide.
