Richmond, Virginia is now home to the world’s first indoor strawberry farm, a cutting-edge endeavour by Plenty Unlimited Inc. The innovative farm promises to deliver strawberries with peak-season flavour throughout the year, made possible through an artificial intelligence-based system.
Founded in Richmond, Plenty Unlimited's farm represents an intersection of technology and agriculture. The farm's AI system processes over 10 million data points daily across 12 growing rooms. This advanced system dynamically adjusts the environment in each room to meet the specific needs of growing strawberry plants, ensuring optimal conditions for growth.
The facility is a striking example of efficiency and sustainability. According to the company, the farm uses 97% less land and up to 90% less water compared to traditional farming methods. Additionally, Plenty Unlimited has employed a new pollination method that forgoes the use of bees. Instead, controlled airflow across strawberry flowers provides what the company describes as a more effective and efficient form of pollination.
Plenty claims its Richmond farm to be the most technologically advanced in the world, capable of mitigating the unpredictabilities posed by natural environmental conditions, which is becoming increasingly crucial in the face of changing climate patterns.
Structurally, the facility maximises space through vertical farming methods. Strawberries are grown on 30-foot-tall towers within a compact 40,000 square feet facility, allowing for intensive yet efficient production. The farm is projected to yield more than 4 million pounds of strawberries annually.
Exclusively growing Driscoll’s brand strawberries, the first batch of produce from the Plenty Richmond Farm is expected to hit the market in early 2025. This follows the company's successful launch of a leafy green vertical farm in Compton, California.
Arama Kukutai, the CEO of Plenty Unlimited, highlights the versatility and resilience of their innovative growing system. “While most vertical farms are limited to lettuces, Plenty spent the past decade designing a patent-pending, modular growing system flexible enough to support a wide variety of crops—including strawberries,” he said in a statement.
The Plenty Richmond Farm marks a significant milestone in the field of climate-agnostic agriculture, suggesting a model that other countries and regions might adopt to safeguard food production against climatic changes. The journey to this point involved over 200 research trials over six years, all aimed at perfecting the indoor cultivation of strawberries to deliver consistent, peak-season flavour year-round.
The introduction of such advanced vertical farms reinforces their potential to diversify crop production, scale up local supply, and contribute to the future stability of the global food system. Notably, other regions in the United States are also seeing similar innovations, such as the development of large indoor farms in Appalachia.
