Hyderabad Hosts International Startup Festival 2024: A Hub for Innovators in AI Era
Hyderabad, Telangana – 27th September 2024: The International Start-up Foundation, a leading not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fostering the growth and development of the start-up ecosystem, co-powered by NTT Data, is hosting the International Startup Festival (ISF) 2024. The event, themed 'Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the AI Era', is taking place at the Engineering Staff College of India (ESCI) in Gachibowli, Hyderabad.
Key Initiatives and Partnerships
The festival saw the International Start-up Foundation signing 12 Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with various institutions. These include Singularity University, We-Hub, US India Chamber of Commerce, Association of Business Women in Commerce and Industry (ABWCI), RICH (Research and Innovation Circle of Hyderabad), Telangana State Innovation Cell, Quality Engineering Foundation, World Trade Centre – Shamshabad, GMR Innovation Centre, IIIT Hyderabad, HYSEA, and NIT Warangal. These strategic partnerships aim to strengthen the start-up ecosystem, particularly encouraging next-generation innovators and women entrepreneurs through mentorship and market access.
Diverse Participation
The three-day event showcases participation from over 250 Chief Experience Officers (CXOs), 300 Venture Capitalists (VCs), 800 Global Angels, and more than 5,000 delegates from over 15 countries including the USA, Canada, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, UAE, and several European nations. This platform allows start-up founders to connect with peers, investors, and industry leaders to collaborate on innovative projects and chart a growth path for their ventures.
Opening Ceremony and ISF Expo
The ISF Expo was inaugurated by Mr D. Shetkar Suresh Kumar, Member of Parliament for Zahirabad, and Mr Jayesh Ranjan, IAS, Special Chief Secretary, Government of Telangana, alongside representatives from the International Start-up Foundation and ESCI. Over 200 curated start-ups demonstrated their innovations at the exhibition, attracting considerable interest from investors and industry leaders. A significant highlight was the Junicorn Pavilion, an exclusive zone for school students and undergraduate innovators, featuring over 30 young ‘Junicorns’ showcasing state-of-the-art solutions in AI and robotics. Initiatives like Hover Robotix and Mentor X are set to empower these young entrepreneurs by providing mentorship, resources, and global networks.
Events and Workshops
The festival included several roundtable discussions, such as the Rural Economic Forum Round Table and the GCC Roundtable. The forum focused on addressing challenges and exploring opportunities for start-ups in various domains, highlighting the need for innovative solutions tailored to a population of 1.4 billion.
Pitch Fest and Key Announcements
One of the most anticipated segments of the festival, the ISF Pitch Fest, saw registrations from over 53,000 start-ups. After a rigorous six-month screening process, 50 start-ups had the opportunity to pitch in front of a diverse jury. The top 10 start-ups announced include Waterfall Automation in Agri/Food, Planytics in Health-Tech, iGowise Mobility in Deep-Tech, Dr. AtHome in Health-Tech, 6Degree in Consumer/Fintech, Kode Blue in Health-Tech, TEN in Health-Tech, Qik Office in Ed-Tech/HR-Tech, Sirixo in Consumer/Fintech, and TIEA Connectors in Deep-Tech. These start-ups will receive mentoring, funding, and market access from the International Start-up Foundation.
Vision and Goals
Mr Shridhar Babu, Minister of IT, E&C, Industries and Commerce, Government of Telangana, remarked on the importance of nurturing youth and upcoming generations to drive technology and software industries through start-ups. He emphasised the government's commitment to creating an infrastructure that helps start-ups find the right markets both in India and overseas, with a vision to foster 40-50 unicorns in Telangana. The government is also planning the establishment of an AI City and a skills university to support the mission.
Dr J.A. Chowdary, Chairperson and Convenor of the International Start-up Foundation, expressed the importance of a problem-solving mindset and innovative solutions. He highlighted rural India as a significant area for start-ups to focus on, given its unique challenges and opportunities for growth. Dr Chowdary also announced the launch of 'Ankura Yatra', a programme involving trips to rural areas to identify and support innovators.
Dr Siva Mahesh Tangutooru, Co-founder and Director of ISF, echoed these sentiments, outlining the foundation's 3-M approach: Mentoring, Money, and Market Access, aimed at preventing start-ups from falling into 'Startup Death Valley'. He announced that ISF Angels has raised Rs. 250 crores, with Rs. 50 crores already deployed to support early-stage start-ups.
Plenary Session and Recognition
The plenary session was attended by Mr Uttam Kumar Reddy, Minister for Irrigation & CAD; Food & Civil Supplies for the Government of Telangana, in the presence of Mr M Bharat, MP, and Mr Srinivasa Balaji Reddy, ED, Vamsiram Builders & Developers, along with Dr J.A. Chowdary. The session recognised individuals and organisations contributing to the innovative mindset and start-up ecosystem.
