Innovative Technology Aims to Prevent Wildfires in California
WALNUT CREEK, California — As the fire season escalates each year, residents prepare for the dual threat of devastating wildfires and prolonged power outages. Such threats have seen transformative responses, with innovative technological solutions emerging to combat the destructive power of wildfires.
Tim Barat, co-founder of Gridware, vividly remembers his firsthand experience with wildfires. Originally a lineman in Australia, Barat witnessed the catastrophic 'Black Saturday,' where 50 wildfires ignited by power lines resulted in 187 fatalities. This harrowing experience inspired Barat to seek preventive solutions. Partnering with UC Berkeley engineering classmate Hall Chen, Barat co-founded Gridware.
Gridware has developed a solar-powered sensor designed to continuously monitor minute movements in utility lines and poles. By employing artificial intelligence, these sensors can identify specific vibrations and the conditions that trigger them. Upon detecting any anomalies, the technology sends immediate alerts to power companies, which can then make informed decisions to shut down power lines if required.
Chen likened the power grid to a guitar, where conductors act as strings and poles as frets. “When you have a physical event impacting the conductors, it creates vibrations that are very different than what you see on a day-to-day basis and so we monitor those vibrations at the pole level,” explained Chen.
At the Richmond field station, Barat, an experienced electrical lineman, demonstrated the technology's effectiveness. "This happens hundreds of times even in a 24-hour period where a branch will break and fall on the lines just like this," he said, as he showed how the sensor detects vegetation contact with power lines before it potentially ignites a fire.
Gridware's technology not only aims to prevent wildfires but also facilitates quicker restoration of power following outages. Typically, utilities must inspect each meter of power lines before restoring power, a process that can take several hours. Knowing the exact location and nature of a problem enables crews to respond faster, ensuring quicker repairs and restoration.
The sensors also monitor real-time environmental factors such as temperature, pressure, wind, and humidity. In California, the sensors are strategically placed in high-risk areas, covering extensive parts of the power grid. Gridware’s commitment to wildfire prevention is illustrated by their deployment of approximately 13,000 sensors across eight states, collaborating with 18 utility companies, including Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E).
Reflecting on the impact of their work, Chen, who grew up in California, expressed his drive to protect his home state. “To be able to actually make a difference for the communities around my home state and other states as well around the country — it’s good for the soul,” he said.
Barat recalled a significant moment when their technology directly prevented a wildfire. “I remember the first time that we received the call back from the utility with confirmation that we had stopped a wildfire,” he said. "Those were their exact words, ‘Without your alert, this would’ve been a forest fire.’ That’s a very emotional experience."
For Barat and Chen, the vision of a future safe from devastating wildfires drives their passion and dedication.
