International Innovation Barometer 2025 Highlights Significant Influence of AI on Global Innovation

The sixth annual International Innovation Barometer, published by the innovation consultancy Ayming, has revealed the profound impact of artificial intelligence (AI) on global innovation. The comprehensive report highlighted that over four-in-five businesses (84 percent) believe AI is positively influencing innovation processes and outputs. This finding underscores that the transformative potential of AI is not just a future promise but a current reality for many companies.

The report examines how businesses are leveraging AI to enhance their innovative capabilities. A considerable portion of companies, 41 percent, has already restructured their R&D teams to integrate AI more extensively into their innovation processes. Among large enterprises, this figure rises to 52 percent.

Ayming's data illustrates the shifting priorities concerning AI within the business community. Implementation of AI stands as the second highest innovation priority, with 29 percent of respondents highlighting it. The broader adoption of technology remains the top priority for 32 percent of businesses. This tight integration of technology and innovation, spurred substantially by AI, demonstrates how these domains are becoming virtually indistinguishable.

The allocation of budgets further mirrors this trend. Nearly half of the businesses surveyed (47 percent) are dedicating between 6 and 20 percent of their innovation budgets to AI-related R&D. Additionally, close to a quarter (22 percent) are investing more than 20 percent of their budgets in this area.

Njy Rios, Director of R&D Incentives at Ayming UK, noted the democratisation of AI with the advent of accessible models such as ChatGPT. "The barrier to entry has been lowered, enabling businesses of all sizes to integrate AI into their operations," Rios mentioned. This accessibility shifts the competitive edge from those who own AI technologies to those who apply them most effectively.

AI is being utilised beyond mere automation, challenging the traditional perception of its utility. The data reveals that 53 percent of businesses are using AI for data analysis to bolster innovation, 43 percent to predict new trends, and 39 percent to generate new ideas. In comparison, only 26 percent are currently using AI primarily for automation purposes. These statistics suggest that businesses perceive AI as a tool for fostering collaboration and creativity in addition to improving efficiency.

Rios further commented on the future trajectory of AI, highlighting a synergy between human creativity and AI's analytical prowess. "AI enhances human creative input rather than replacing it," she said, noting that AI’s current capacities are not designed to generate original thoughts independently but to augment human innovation.

The findings from this year's report suggest rapid changes in the innovation lifecycle, potentially reducing the time from ideation to output and maximising the impact of investments in innovation.

The report is based on a survey conducted in June 2024 involving 1,227 R&D and innovation directors, Chief Financial Officers, Chief Executive Officers, and Chief Technology Officers from 17 countries: Belgium, Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Hungary, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Singapore, Slovakia, Spain, United Kingdom, and United States. The survey represents an equal distribution of businesses from various sectors, including automotive, construction, finance, manufacturing, pharma, and technology, encompassing both large and small enterprises.
