KT Corporation and Microsoft Forge Five-Year AI and Cloud Partnership in South Korea

KT Corporation and Microsoft have announced a significant five-year strategic partnership aimed at driving advancements in artificial intelligence (AI), cloud technologies, and IT business development within South Korea. This collaboration involves both financial investment from KT and resource support from Microsoft, with the overarching goal of boosting AI services and fostering innovation across various sectors in South Korea.
The agreement outlines a focus on five key areas, with a particular emphasis on developing customised AI solutions tailored for the Korean market. This initiative will see the creation of bespoke versions of Microsoft’s GPT-4 and smaller language models, utilising KT’s data. The resulting AI models are anticipated to be deployed in numerous applications, including customer service chatbots and industry-specific solutions tailored for businesses.
Young-Shub Kim, CEO of KT Corporation, highlighted the significance of this partnership, stating, “The collaboration with Microsoft presents a pivotal opportunity for technological cooperation, expanding Korea’s AI infrastructure and driving transformative innovation across industries and everyday life.”
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella echoed these sentiments, saying, “Our strategic partnership combines KT’s industry expertise with the power of our entire tech stack, from Azure AI to Microsoft 365 Copilot. Together, we aim to accelerate the AI transformation of Korean organisations across both the private and public sectors.”
In addition to developing AI solutions, the partnership includes the launch of sovereign cloud solutions built on Microsoft Cloud for Sovereignty. These solutions are specifically designed to meet the stringent privacy and regulatory requirements of Korea’s public sector and regulated industries, ensuring compliance with local regulations and standards.
KT Corporation plans to establish an AI transformation service company as part of this collaboration. This new entity will focus on assisting Korean businesses in adopting AI technologies, with aspirations to extend these services to ASEAN markets in the future. This initiative aims to enable businesses to integrate AI more effectively, fostering technological growth and innovation on a broader scale.
