New AI Features for iPhones Come with a Significant Trade-Off
iPhone users are being alerted to a significant compromise they will need to make in order to access the forthcoming AI features from Apple. The much-anticipated "Apple Intelligence" platform is set to be introduced to compatible handsets before the end of this year, promising several innovative functionalities.
Apple Intelligence will include various advanced features such as a smarter Siri, an AI spellchecker, and a photo cleanup tool. While some users with early updates have already had a glimpse of the new technology, the complete roll-out is scheduled to culminate in January 2025 with a major overhaul of Siri.
These groundbreaking AI capabilities, however, come with a major caveat: storage space. According to Apple's recently published "Introduction to Apple Intelligence on iPhone" note, the new AI features will require at least 4GB of storage space, which is roughly equivalent to the space needed for a full-length HD movie. This is in addition to the 10GB required for the operating system itself.
For users of the latest iPhone models, which generally start with 128GB of storage, this effectively reduces available space by around 14GB from the outset if one opts to utilise these AI features. Moreover, Apple has indicated that the storage demand will likely increase over time as the system evolves and more features are introduced.
The introduction note explicitly states, "Storage requirements for on-device Apple Intelligence models will increase as more features roll out." This implies that users may need to reserve even more space on their devices in the future to fully leverage these advanced features.
Moreover, access to Apple Intelligence is not solely dependent on software updates. There are also minimum hardware requirements to consider. Even with iOS 18.1 installed, only specific models will support the new AI platform. These include the iPhone 16 series along with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models.
However, the roll-out of Apple Intelligence is not limited to iPhones. iPad and Mac users will also get access to the new features through the Sequoia 15.1 update, ensuring a wider user base gets to experience Apple's latest technological innovations.
The news comes on the heels of SunTech assistant editor Jamie Harris’s review of the iPhone 16, which was unveiled earlier this month. Harris's review provided an in-depth look at the latest hardware and speculated on how it would synergise with upcoming software features, although the detailed trade-offs were not as clear at that time.
As Apple continues to push the boundaries of technological innovation, the necessary trade-offs for embracing their latest advancements highlight the ongoing balance between cutting-edge features and practical usability for consumers.
