Rising Concerns Over AI-Induced Job Displacement in the Social Sector

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the social sector has widely been considered a revolutionary step, promising enhanced efficiency, reduced workloads, and streamlined operations. AI applications now encompass areas such as fundraising, donor management, communication, predictive analytics, and content development, providing substantial support to nonprofit organisations. However, while many within the sector view AI as a beneficial tool, there exists a growing apprehension surrounding the potential job losses and livelihood disruptions AI advancements could bring.

Paul Lamb, a nonprofit management consultant and Principal at Man on A Mission Consulting, is well-acquainted with the advantages AI brings. Lamb utilises AI tools like ChatGPT and specialised fundraising platforms to craft and refine grant proposals, reducing the required effort from days to mere hours. Clients in the sector have also begun to adopt these tools, a trend that could eventually lessen the demand for traditional grant-writing services.

The prospect of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) intensifies these concerns. AGI represents a potential future where AI systems could perform tasks with cognitive abilities akin to humans, possibly reshaping the entire work landscape. Although views on the exact timeline for AGI's arrival vary, notable figures such as Google DeepMind’s co-founder Shane Legg and entrepreneur Elon Musk suggest it could be realised as early as 2028 or even 2026.

Even short of achieving AGI, AI advancements are already leading to automation and job losses across diverse sectors including media, retail, and education. A ResumeBuilder report highlighted that among 750 business leaders surveyed, 37% confirmed AI had replaced workers in 2023, and 44% anticipated layoffs due to AI efficiencies in 2024. A McKinsey report from 2023 predicted that AI could replace 2.4 million US jobs by 2030, with an additional 12 million experiencing a shift in their occupational roles.

Within nonprofit strategic planning, Lamb’s process generally involves comprehensive data collection, interviews, and planning retreats. However, with AI enhancing data-gathering and predictive capabilities, even these complex tasks could soon be automated. The human element in strategic retreats might remain intact for a while longer, but advancements in interactive bots and robots could jeopardise even these roles.

Certain job categories currently appear more vulnerable to these changes, including positions in clerical, secretarial, marketing, administration, human resources, and finance. In marketing, AI can already analyse audience data, optimise outreach, and personalise content distribution. Advocates for AI argue that automating mundane tasks could free up workers to focus on more creative and human-centred activities. For instance, in nonprofit fund development, this could lead to more direct donor engagement. However, the emergence of AI tools like Givzy’s autonomous fundraising avatar raises concerns that AI might eventually supersede human ability to establish and maintain personal connections with donors.

The potential for AI to replace high-level leadership roles in nonprofits is also becoming a reality. In the private sector, China-based NetDragon Websoft appointed an AI program named Tang Yu as its CEO to make critical operational decisions. Similarly, the United Arab Emirates-based IHC has introduced an AI observer, Aiden Insight, to its board. This trend suggests that Executive Directors and Board members in nonprofit organisations could face AI-driven counterparts in the future.

Notwithstanding these concerns, there is hope that AI could significantly enhance the social sector workforce. As organisations and philanthropies increasingly adopt AI, both employees and beneficiaries could benefit from more personalised services. For example, AI could analyse data to provide customised interventions, such as tailored financial assistance. However, challenges such as the potential for AI to introduce bias in decision-making, and the diminishing human element in services like counselling and community engagement, remain significant.

The nonprofit sector's typically slow adoption of cutting-edge technologies and its emphasis on human relationships might slow AI-driven job disruptions. Nonetheless, areas like grant writing and strategic planning face inevitable transformation. As Lamb indicates, the sector must contemplate AI-driven changes and their implications sooner rather than later.

Although Lamb is not entirely convinced that AI will result in wholesale job replacement and degradation in nonprofits, he acknowledges that significant disruptions are likely in the medium to long term. The nature and extent of these disruptions remain uncertain, emphasising the need for careful consideration of AI's future impact on nonprofit employment.
