Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has reaffirmed his steadfast belief that artificial intelligence (AI) will bring about a transformative era for humanity, termed "The Intelligence Age". In a recent blog post and subsequent interviews, Altman elaborated on his vision, positing that AI will not only bring unfathomable prosperity but also address some of the world's most intractable challenges such as climate change, space colonisation, and unravelling the mysteries of physics.

In his blog post, Altman expressed optimism about the future, suggesting that everyone’s quality of life could improve beyond current standards due to the advancements in AI. He stated, “We can have shared prosperity to a degree that seems unimaginable today; in the future, everyone’s lives can be better than anyone’s life is now.” Despite the incremental nature of these advancements, Altman is confident that they will eventually lead to staggering achievements becoming an everyday reality.

This week, Altman found himself countering scepticism from certain quarters that dismiss the tangible benefits of large language models as illusory. In an interview, he defended the capabilities of AI by highlighting its potential to tackle complex tasks, such as proving unproven mathematical theorems, thus dismissing claims that AI is merely about predicting subsequent tokens in data sequences. He remarked, "Once it can start to prove unproven mathematical theorems, do we really still want to debate: 'Oh, but it's just predicting the next token?'"

Central to Altman’s assertions is the notion of artificial general intelligence (AGI), a level of AI that matches or surpasses human abilities. He believes that AGI will eradicate many of humanity's persistent problems and usher in an unprecedented golden age. However, his utopian vision, which he metaphorically calls "The Strawberry Shortcut" in reference to OpenAI’s recent advancements in artificial reasoning, is seen by some as overly simplistic.

Altman points to the historical march of technology, suggesting it has democratised luxuries that were once exclusive to the elite, noting examples such as air-conditioning and modern conveniences available to the general populace. However, he acknowledges that not all enjoy these benefits equally, citing the persistent issues of homelessness and poverty as evidence of inequality. While technology has significantly progressed, the distribution of its benefits remains uneven.

Altman’s views on the potential impact of AGI on employment and society were also highlighted in a podcast, where he echoed his support for universal basic income (UBI) as a means to mitigate the economic disruptions caused by job automation. He drew a parallel to his experiences at the Burning Man festival, where the ethos of community care and generosity aligns with his vision of a post-AGI society where communal wellbeing takes precedence. “Burning Man is part of what the post-AGI can look like, where people are just focused on doing stuff for each other, caring for each other and making incredible gifts to get each other,” Altman said.

Despite his optimistic view, Altman faces criticism regarding the practicability of UBI and the willingness of wealthy individuals to support such schemes. Critics question whether those who accumulate vast wealth, particularly through AI enterprises, would be inclined to redistribute it extensively. Furthermore, the political landscape in countries like the United States, where major parties exhibit resistance to social welfare programs, casts doubt on the broad acceptance and implementation of UBI.

While Altman envisions AI as the panacea for humanity’s grand dilemmas, historical patterns of human behaviour suggest caution. Even if AI were to devise solutions to critical problems, human implementation often remains a stumbling block. The persistence of warfare, despite widespread understanding of its devastation, exemplifies this challenge.

Sam Altman’s propositions on the potential of AI and AGI highlight a revolutionary future, offering solutions to enduring issues. However, the realisation of these benefits depends on equitable implementation and societal readiness to embrace and distribute technological gains.
