AI-Driven Transformation: TM Forum and AWS Introduce GAMIT for Telecommunications Industry

In a significant move to leverage artificial intelligence within the telecommunications sector, TM Forum has joined forces with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to launch GAMIT, the Generative AI Maturity Interactive Tool. This innovative tool aims to revamp business models of Communication Service Providers (CSPs), promoting efficiency and fostering growth in a competitive market landscape.

The inception of GAMIT is rooted in a comprehensive study involving over 200 AI decision-makers from CSPs across the globe. The collected anonymised and aggregated data facilitated the development of an interactive platform that benchmarks generative AI (GenAI) maturity. This tool allows CSPs to measure their progress against their regional and global counterparts, identify key use cases, and expedite the transition from development to large-scale production.

The potential advantages of AI for CSPs are vast. According to McKinsey, the adoption of generative AI could unlock nearly $100 billion in incremental value and up to $180 billion in productivity gains. Despite this promising forecast, initial findings from the GAMIT data reveal that the adoption of GenAI is still nascent, with many providers finding it challenging to integrate AI as a core component rather than as auxiliary solutions.

The data from GAMIT brings to light several critical insights. Merely 25% of operators feel adept at employing advanced AI techniques like fine-tuning, Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG), and prompt engineering for precise results. Only 16% are confident in leveraging these methods for cost optimisation and return on investment (ROI). Alarmingly, a mere third of CSPs have a Chief Experience Officer (CXO) dedicated to AI strategy, and just 14% have more than ten GenAI use cases actively in production. Additionally, only 33% of operators boast a strong GenAI pipeline, with the most significant impediment being the lack of accuracy during proof-of-concept stages.

These challenges underscore the necessity for collaborative efforts within the industry to address and overcome the hurdles associated with scaling GenAI implementations. The benchmarking model that supports GAMIT revolves around six pillars of GenAI maturity:

  1. Technology Understanding and Maturity: Evaluating and adapting foundational models to cater to industry-specific use cases, ensuring swift ROI.
  2. Organisation, Responsibilities and Skills: Embedding essential skills and roles within the organisation to prioritise and execute AI deployments efficiently.
  3. Data Readiness and Availability: Facilitating easy access to high-quality telecom domain data across the CSP to monetise data assets and enhance model performance.
  4. Governance, Privacy, Compliance and Security: Implementing robust policies to balance privacy and security with operational speed.
  5. Business Objectives: Enabling quick application of GenAI to high-value workflows, realising substantial value increments.
  6. Taking AI Use Cases into Production: Accelerating the transition from proof of concept to live deployments using cloud-native components.

George Glass, Chief Technology Officer of TM Forum, highlighted the transformative potential of generative AI for CSPs. He acknowledged the existing concerns, such as technical expertise, measurable use cases, accuracy, and costs, which hinder the full realisation of AI benefits. Glass stated that GAMIT addresses these issues by providing CSPs with a clear benchmark of their GenAI maturity, alongside a practical roadmap for scaling AI across their operations. This initiative aligns with TM Forum’s broader mission to support CSPs and their suppliers in thriving in an AI-driven future.

GAMIT's development was a result of a collaborative effort between TM Forum, its members, and AWS. The process incorporated extensive data collection, followed by a meticulous design and testing phase to assure the tool's accuracy and reliability. The final product is a user-friendly, interactive tool that adds substantial value to the global telco industry, exemplifying TM Forum's dedication to aiding CSPs in their AI transformation journey.

Ishwar Parulkar, Chief Technologist of Telecom at AWS, echoed this sentiment, praising the rapid innovation and experimentation within the telco sector. He noted that within a year, tangible use cases for generative AI emerged, which CSPs are now keen to scale. Parulkar expressed enthusiasm about AWS’s collaboration with TM Forum in supporting CSPs' generative AI ambitions, anticipating GAMIT's unveiling at Innovate Americas and future engagements with industry leaders.
