Arthur Sadoun Emphasises the Role of Creativity in Business at Campaign Live Conference
LONDON – Arthur Sadoun, Chief Executive Officer of Publicis Groupe, underscored the indispensable role of creativity in the advertising industry during his keynote at the Campaign Live conference held today in London’s City. Reflecting on his 25-year career in business development, Sadoun remarked, “I have never won a pitch [whether creative or media] without a creative idea. This is where the value and differentiation is.”
In an engaging fireside chat with Gideon Spanier, Editor-in-Chief of Campaign, Sadoun elaborated on his strategic approach to leadership, while highlighting the centrality of creativity in driving new business. He noted that CEOs should lead “from the centre and not from the top,” and disclosed that his current work schedule involves “having a pitch a week.”
Investing in Creativity
Sadoun emphasised Publicis Groupe's commitment to investing in creativity, maintaining that a single great idea can significantly influence the future of a company. He lauded strategy planners, deeming the creative brief the most crucial phase in the ideation process. “You take creative constraints and turn them into a great idea,” he stated.
Addressing the evolving landscape of personalised content, Sadoun acknowledged the challenges and opportunities in delivering impactful personalised marketing. He questioned, “How do you deliver truly personalised content with impact? We have a lot to do in this area.”
Industry Changes & Traditional Campaigns
Sadoun also reflected on the shifts within the industry, observing a decline in large, impactful campaigns that once dominated Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. “Where is the great work in Cannes? Most of the time it is small projects,” he noted, referencing past high-profile campaigns for brands such as Adidas and Coca-Cola.
No Silos, No Solos, No Bozos
Elaborating on Publicis Groupe's status as the fastest-growing holding company, Sadoun outlined three core strategies: personalisation, eliminating operational silos, and prioritising people. The company's acquisition of Epsilon exemplifies its focus on personalisation. He summarised the firm's ethos with the phrase, "No silos, no solos, no bozos," indicating an organisational structure designed to foster seamless collaboration.
Despite his competitive nature, Sadoun expressed satisfaction at rival Omnicom’s recent achievements, stating, “I am very happy to see Omnicom doing well. I am very competitive when I pitch I want to win but I am very interested in seeing the industry grow well.”
Stance on Artificial Intelligence
Sadoun reiterated Publicis Groupe’s critical stance on artificial intelligence, referencing a controversial video released in June that satirised industry figures such as Sam Altman of Open AI, Mark Zuckerberg of Meta, and Sundar Pichai of Google, alongside other advertising executives. “Some loved it, some lacked a sense of humour,” Sadoun commented, reinforcing his belief that while AI capabilities are significant, Publicis Groupe will “never become an AI company.”
Hybrid Working Model
On the topic of hybrid working, Sadoun stressed the importance of office presence to maintain company culture and career progression. Publicis Groupe has mandated a three-day office week, believing that younger employees, in particular, benefit from in-person interactions. “People need to come back to the office because culture matters,” he asserted.
Brexit Implications
Sadoun briefly touched on the ramifications of Brexit, citing an additional 20 minutes to his travel time from Paris to London. He praised the UK’s rich creative heritage, calling it “the birthplace of creativity,” and commended its competitive spirit in the realm of creative business.
The insights shared by Arthur Sadoun at the Campaign Live conference provide a comprehensive view of the prevailing trends and challenges in the advertising industry, while reinforcing the timeless value of creativity in business success.
