Berlin's AI Startup Briink Secures €3.85 Million Seed Funding to Boost ESG Data Accuracy

Berlin-based AI startup Briink, focused on enhancing the capabilities of ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) and sustainability teams, announced today the successful closure of a €3.85 million Seed funding round. The financing was co-led by EquityPitcher Ventures and 13books Capital, with additional backing from existing investors including Merantix, seed + speed Ventures, and several prominent angel investors.

This fresh injection of capital will primarily be allocated towards the development of an innovative AI product designed to assist sustainability professionals in extracting actionable insights from environmental datasets. Additionally, the product aims to create consistent and verifiable audit trails, ensuring data accuracy and quality while enabling faster workflows.

Briink's overarching goal is to introduce AI agents specifically tailored for ESG teams. These tools are intended to optimize workflows and free up human experts to engage in strategic, high-impact work crucial for successful climate transitions.

In light of new regulations such as the European Green Deal, companies are under increasing pressure to provide high-quality data on their environmental impact. Starting in January 2025, over 50,000 EU companies will be required to demonstrate compliance with stringent environmental standards. This escalating regulatory landscape is making the role of ESG teams increasingly challenging, with traditional data processing and verification methods struggling to keep up.

Briink aims to address these challenges head-on. Serving over 40 enterprise clients, including some of the world's most significant corporations, funds, and advisory firms, Briink uses domain-specific AI and large language models (LLMs) to streamline the verification process for ESG data. This ensures that data is both accurate and comprehensive, meeting and exceeding regulatory standards.

Tomas van der Heijden, co-founder and CEO of Briink, underscored the importance of high-quality ESG data. “ESG professionals face a critical challenge: auditing and verifying vast amounts of data in a landscape still plagued by opacity and greenwashing. High-quality, audited ESG data is essential to the climate transition, but manual processes and fragmented standards often compromise accuracy. In a field where precision is key to maintaining trust, Briink's domain-specific AI achieves over 90% accuracy on ESG data—far exceeding generic solutions like ChatGPT. This ensures reliable insights, helping organisations combat greenwashing while accelerating progress toward true sustainability."

Spencer Lake, Partner at 13books Capital, shared his perspective on the investment. “As we transition to a more sustainable future, there is no question that we need constructively creative AI platforms like Briink, to create tangible impact. For funds, corporates, and their supply chains, Briink is the go-to solution providing transparency and ensuring they remain compliant with the onslaught of ESG regulations. We’re very pleased to join Sam, Tomas, and the team as they continue to drive meaningful impact on this mission-critical journey”.

Atlas Metrics Closes €12.2 Million Series A Funding to Enhance ESG Compliance

In a separate yet related development, ESG platform Atlas Metrics announced the closure of a €12.2 million Series A funding round. Founded to provide an all-in-one platform for ESG compliance and sustainability performance management, Atlas Metrics employs automation, AI, secure data sharing, and advanced analytics to facilitate the measurement and communication of organisational impact across industries.

Wladimir Nikoluk, Founder and CEO of Atlas Metrics, commented on the challenges of ESG reporting. "For all businesses across all industries, ESG reporting and compliance has become a necessary part of operations. But it is costly and risky to manage. This funding will allow us to enhance our product offerings to simplify ESG compliance and turn sustainability data into a competitive advantage."

By 2025, more than 62,500 organisations will face stringent annual requirements, including double materiality assessments, corporate carbon footprint accounting, and audit-ready CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) reporting. For instance, a German company with €100 million in revenue is estimated to face an annual cost of €250,000 for manual compliance and a potential €5 million fine (5 per cent of turnover) for non-compliance.

Atlas Metrics already serves clients such as KfW Capital, which uses the platform to monitor its portfolio of over 100 funds and 1,300 portfolio companies. In collaboration with DG Nexolution, a key provider of digital solutions within the German cooperative network, up to 700 banks and their business customers will gain access to the platform.

The Series A funding round was led by MMC Ventures and included participation from existing investors b2ventures, Cherry Ventures, and Redstone.

Filip Dames, Founding Partner at Cherry Ventures, highlighted Atlas Metrics' technological focus. "Atlas' success is testimony to their commitment to building a technology-first rather than consulting-first company. For 3 years, they have innovated around data transfer and aggregation within and across organisations, modular software architecture, and sophisticated end-to-end user flows. We are proud to have backed them since day one."

Oliver Richards, Partner at MMC Ventures, also commended the company's vision. "Atlas Metrics is at the forefront of a critical shift, accelerated by regulatory tailwinds, towards greater transparency and accountability in business practices. We are thoroughly impressed by their comprehensive platform, which not only streamlines ESG compliance but also offers valuable data and analytics, enabling organisations to make informed strategic decisions."
