CelcomDigi and SK Telecom Forge AI Partnership for Malaysian Market

In a significant move aimed at revolutionising the Malaysian telecommunications landscape, CelcomDigi, a leading Malaysian telco, has inked a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with South Korean telecom giant SK Telecom. The agreement was sealed on Monday at a signing ceremony held at SK Telecom’s headquarters in Seoul.

The partnership focuses on leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to develop and commercialise innovative solutions for the Malaysian market. Under the MoU, both companies will collaborate extensively, sharing expertise and resources to create and scale AI use cases tailored to the unique requirements of Malaysian consumers and businesses.

CelcomDigi CEO Idham Nawawi expressed the company's ambitious vision during the ceremony, as reported by Bernama, Malaysia's national news agency. "We have the capabilities, we connect more than 20 million users on our network, we have solid infrastructure, we are building the facilities, and this is a good foundation for us to move to the space of AI," Nawawi emphasised. He further revealed that CelcomDigi aspires to become one of Malaysia's leading AI companies in the forthcoming years.

The initial phase of this collaboration will see AI use cases being tested and implemented within CelcomDigi's internal departments. These use cases will then be fine-tuned and scaled for commercialisation, enabling a broader rollout across the corporate landscape and public domains in Malaysia.

In July, CelcomDigi took a substantial step towards this goal by launching its AI Experience Centre (AiX). The centre showcases AI-driven solutions contributed by an ecosystem comprising 40 global tech companies, including SK Telecom, alongside local partners and solution providers. The AiX Centre aims to foster a collaborative environment for developing cutting-edge AI technologies and applications.

Beyond AI, CelcomDigi and SK Telecom are also exploring future technologies, evidenced by a separate MoU signed in March 2023. This agreement underscores their joint interest in the metaverse, signifying a broader strategy to integrate advanced digital experiences into mainstream offerings.

The collaboration between CelcomDigi and SK Telecom represents a strategic effort to position Malaysia at the forefront of AI innovation in Southeast Asia. As these initiatives mature, they promise to bring transformative changes to various sectors, from telecommunications and finance to healthcare and education, ultimately benefiting millions of Malaysians.

The partnership reflects the growing importance of international cooperation in driving technological progress and adapting advanced technologies to local markets. It also highlights CelcomDigi's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and service quality as it navigates the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
