Ello Unveils 'Storytime' AI-Driven Interactive Reading Tool for Children
New York, October 2023 — Ello, the innovative AI reading companion, has announced the launch of a groundbreaking new product named “Storytime,” designed to enhance the reading experience for children. The premium product aims to foster both reading skills and creative storytelling.
The "Storytime" feature, revealed to the public on Monday, allows young users to actively participate in the generation of personalised stories by choosing from a diverse selection of settings, characters, and plots. This method engages children by enabling them to create a unique narrative, such as an adventure involving a hamster named Greg who showcases his talents in an outer space competition.
Offering extensive customisation, children can select from dozens of prompts, leading to thousands of story combinations ensuring a unique experience each time. This engagement fits seamlessly into Ello's broader mission of improving children's literacy. The core AI companion — depicted as a friendly, bright blue elephant — aids in this mission by listening to children read aloud, identifying mispronunciations, and offering corrections for missed words. Additionally, if a child is uncertain about pronouncing a word, they can tap on a question mark icon for guidance.
"Storytime" offers flexibility through two reading modes: one where Ello and the child alternate reading paragraphs and another, simpler mode for younger readers in which Ello handles most of the reading. This accommodates different reading levels and provides a smoother learning curve for developing readers.
While AI-assisted story creation tools are not unprecedented, with entrants like Amazon’s 2022 animated story generator and startups like Scarlet Panda and Story Spark also in the fray, Ello asserts that its Storytime feature excels by virtue of its advanced AI. This intelligent system adapts to each child's responses and teaches critical reading skills through phonics-based strategies, an approach that, according to Ello, surpasses the capabilities of OpenAI's Whisper and Google's speech API.
Ello's tailored approach also integrates seamlessly with the user's current reading level and weekly lessons. For instance, if the focus is on practising the “ch” sound, the AI strategically incorporates words containing this sound into the story, like “chair” and “cheer.”
To ensure the stories are suitable for children, Ello's engineering team has implemented stringent safety measures. Over several months, the company rigorously tested the product with teachers, children, and reading specialists. The current iteration permits children to choose from a predefined set of story options, though plans are in place to evolve this with more child-driven content creation in future versions.
Catalin Voss, co-founder and CTO of Ello, highlighted the importance of guided creativity for young minds: “Kids prefer some guardrails at some level. It’s the blank paper problem. You ask a five-year-old, ‘What do you want the story to be about?’ And they kind of get overwhelmed,” he explained.
Ello has also recently launched an iOS app, broadening the accessibility of its AI reading companion, which was previously limited to iPads, Android tablets, and Amazon devices. This move is part of Ello’s ongoing effort to reach more users, with over 700,000 books read by tens of thousands of families.
Ello's subscription service is priced at $14.99 per month, with subsidised rates available for families receiving government assistance, who can subscribe for $2.99 per month. In addition, Ello collaborates with low-income schools, providing the service at no extra cost.
In an effort to further its educational impact, Ello has made its library of decodable children’s books available online for free, emphasising the company's commitment to making learning accessible and engaging for all children.
