Fiverr's 2024 Marketing Executives Report Highlights Growing Dependence on Freelancers and AI Concerns

New York - Fiverr has released its second annual Marketing Executives Report from Fiverr Pro, revealing that the marketing industry in the United States is in a state of evolution. The 2024 report underscores a marked increase in the utilisation of freelancers and a persistent wariness surrounding the impact of artificial intelligence (AI).

According to the report, marketing leaders are making significant adjustments to their strategies to stay competitive. This includes greater reliance on freelance talent to fill skill gaps and a more relaxed approach to return-to-office (RTO) policies.

Increased Dependency on Freelancers

The report reveals a considerable uptick in the use of freelance professionals within the marketing sector. Notably, 69% of marketing executives reported an increase in freelancer utilisation this year. Moreover, freelancers contributed to at least one out of every four projects for 63% of the surveyed leaders, signifying their integral role in the industry.

Maya Roisman, General Manager of Fiverr Pro, stated, "The leaders who use freelancers don’t see them as just a bonus; they’re productivity game-changers. It’s clear that freelancers aren’t just here to pick up the slack—they’re here to help you win."

Addressing Skill Gaps with Freelancers

Post-layoff skill gaps have been another pressing issue for marketing executives. The report notes that 28% of these leaders are turning to freelancers to cover the skill shortages left by workforce reductions. This reliance highlights the importance of freelance talent in maintaining operational efficiency and agility.

Relaxation of Return-to-Office Policies

Another notable trend is the relaxation of RTO policies. While 87% of executives still maintain some form of RTO policy, this is a decrease from 95% in 2023. Among those who frequently use freelancers, 43% have adopted more flexible office policies, indicating a shift toward hybrid workforce models.

Quarterly Challenges and Outsourcing

Marketing executives identified the second and third quarters of the year as the most challenging times. Over half of the respondents are contemplating outsourcing brand management and other essential functions to freelancers during these periods to manage workload and stress more effectively.

Pervasive AI Concerns

Despite AI's growing prominence, a significant portion of marketing executives remain cautious. Some 63% of those surveyed expressed concerns about AI's impact on the industry, highlighting a cautious approach to integrating AI-driven technologies.

Strategic Workforce Planning

The report underscores a strategic shift towards making freelance talent a core part of marketing teams. A notable 70% of marketing executives have transitioned freelancers into full-time roles, demonstrating the long-term value they see in freelance talent. Additionally, nearly all (99%) executives who frequently engage freelancers are likely to recommend this approach to their peers.

Methodology

The research involved 503 U.S. marketing executives from companies with 50 or more employees and was conducted by Censuswide between June 8, 2024, and August 15, 2024. This study adheres to the Market Research Society’s (MRS) code of conduct and ESOMAR principles.
