Laurene Powell Jobs' Emerson Collective Expands AI Investments Globally

Laurene Powell Jobs, philanthropist, investor, and widow of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, is making significant inroads into the artificial intelligence (AI) sector through her investment company and family office, Emerson Collective. Despite the nondisclosure of exact investment amounts, data from private wealth intelligence platform Fintrx suggests that Emerson Collective has participated in AI funding rounds totalling more than $1 billion.

Emerson Collective, known for its extensive focus on education, the environment, and healthcare, has diversified its investment strategies since 2022 to encompass at least 11 AI-related startups, according to exclusive data shared with CNBC. These investments have been global, with companies spanning various industries, including healthcare, imaging technologies, educational tools, and language models. Key investments include a New York-based AI medical company, a San Jose, California-based image analyzer, a French developer of large language models, and a Norwegian startup developing AI presentations for teachers.

In a notable development reported by The New York Times, Powell Jobs' AI investment strategy includes backing a new venture involving Jony Ive, former Apple designer, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. Together, they aim to create a new AI "computing device." This project seeks to raise up to $1 billion by the end of the year, with Emerson Collective as a founding investor.

Emerson’s investments reflect a broader trend within the high-net-worth community, where AI has become a prominent investment theme. According to the UBS Global Family Office Report, 78% of family offices plan to invest in AI over the next two to three years, making it the most popular investment category for 2024.

Powell Jobs’ foray into AI began even before the release of OpenAI's ChatGPT, which has since sparked widespread interest and investment in AI technologies. Emerson Collective's early AI investments include a June 2022 $80 million Series C funding round for Proximie, a health tech platform connecting operating rooms, and an August 2022 $14 million Series A round for Atropos Health, which aids physicians with clinical data.

Subsequent investments have extended Emerson’s influence into various regions and sectors. Notably, the company infused a $4.6 million seed round into Norway’s Curipod, facilitating AI-driven interactive educational lessons, and participated in a $415 million Series A round for Mistral, a French company specialising in large language models.

Most recently, Emerson Collective invested in Formation Bio, an AI pharmaceutical company, contributing to its $372 million funding round in June, alongside a $33 million follow-on round for Atropos Health.

Emerson’s technology strategy is spearheaded by Raffi Krikorian, a former executive at Uber and Twitter. While total assets under Emerson Collective’s management remain undisclosed, Powell Jobs herself has a net worth of $11.5 billion, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.

The increasing investments in AI by Emerson Collective underscore the emerging significance of artificial intelligence across diverse sectors and geographical landscapes, reflecting a broader investment trend among family offices and high-net-worth individuals globally.
