OpenAI’s ChatGPT and the Revolution of Artificial Intelligence
On 30 November 2022, an inconspicuous tweet by OpenAI introduced ChatGPT to the world: “Today we launched ChatGPT. Try talking with it here: chat.openai.com.” This modest announcement marked the beginning of what would become a significant transformation in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and its application across various sectors.
ChatGPT, a language model developed by OpenAI, quickly evolved from a simple tech novelty to a powerful tool that captivated the public and industry alike. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman outlined a promising future where AI would evolve into helpful assistants capable of conversing, answering questions, giving advice, performing tasks, and eventually discovering new knowledge.
The launch of ChatGPT Plus further broadened its influence. By March, AI implementations were being integrated everywhere from Snapchat’s My AI to Quizlet’s Q-chat to Google’s Search AI. This rapid adoption fuelled concerns about AI approaching human-level intelligence. However, these apprehensions were balanced by the tangible benefits AI touted for various sectors, especially education and industry.
In educational settings, AI has shown great promise. It personalises learning experiences, tailoring content and feedback based on individual student progress. “People have different learning styles and learn at different rates. AI models can… learn about an individual’s progress as they work. AI can adjust content and feedback, providing personalised learning through a program tailored to each participant,” said Nouhad Rizk, a professor of computer science.
Assistant professor of computer science, Dan Biediger, likened the AI revolution to the transition from horses to automobiles, noting that while some sectors may face disruption, new industries and job opportunities will emerge. “There will be massive changes. Moving from horses to automobiles. There was a big feat that people would go out of business… but there were a ton of new jobs in the automobile industry. So even though it will affect some things that exist now, there will be a lot more new opportunities that can come up,” Biediger explained.
The transformative potential of AI can also be compared to the advent of the internet, which overcame initial controversies to revolutionise the worlds of computing and communication, opening vast new opportunities for information access and industry development.
The concept of artificial intelligence is not a contemporary one. Discussions of automata date back to ancient civilisations such as Egypt and Greece, where sacred statues were believed to be imbued with minds and emotions by their craftsmen. Hermes Trismegistus remarked, “By discovering the true nature of the gods, man has been able to reproduce it.”
This ancient intrigue parallels the modern Turing Test, which measures a machine’s ability to exhibit intelligent behaviour indistinguishable from a human. ChatGPT, supported by extensive datasets, notably performs well on such tests. CAPTCHA, often seen as a nuisance to internet users, plays a part in training AI systems to understand the intricacies of language and context.
As AI continues to advance, it is transforming education to focus more on creativity, critical thinking, and social interaction. The journey of AI, akin to historical innovations such as electricity or the internet, heralds a period of profound and lasting benefits for society when guided responsibly.
